I love this music sidebar thing. I have so much fun choosing songs! This one was from my high school pre-game warm up CD. Go Lady Bruins! (For full imagery sake, imagine me dazzling in Gold and Brown...running a lap with my team while we're all swinging our arms)

Last night I went and played volleyball at the Stake Center. I realized today that I could post about it with absolutely no censoring. Nobody that was there reads this. Nobody even knows who else was there. Freedom!!!!!
I have been wishing, hoping, plotting for a volleyball night for women for as long as I've been married. In Denver, our church building was really unique in that they didn't have a gym, but rather, a true cultural hall. The ceiling was lower, it was carpeted (without basketball lines) and had stairs to the stage that went the entire width of it. You know....like the Lincoln Memorial or something. We did attempt to play volleyball there occasionally, but with the low ceiling, flimsy posts and risk of major rug burn, actual play there happened few and far between.
Of course, now that it finally starts here, I am moving. It's actually been going on for a month now but last night was the first time I didn't have a conflict or memory lapse. I got to the church at 8:30 and met two other ladies passing a ball back and forth to each other. I turned on my super charm and introduced myself and we made a triangle. Bump, bump, bump. Wheee!
Another woman comes and now there are four of us. Bump, Bump....wait a minute....set....bump. I'm still smiling but starting to wonder if this was the better choice over my bubble bath. After about fifteen minutes, the person with the keys to the closet shows up and we finally get the net set up.
It's been forever since I've played a game with a net set at women's height, which is way more fun. The few times I've played anything but backyard ball, the game is co-ed so the net is raised to the men's setting. For good reason too....the ego of certain men usually takes over and it prevents most from pummeling the ball down onto unsuspecting Sally Sue. Plus, I can't hit on a men's net. My vertical is all of about three inches.
While the net is getting set up, a few more women show up so there are nine of us total. We play four on five, which is o.k., but there are a lot of holes on the court and no one on either side is good enough to cover them. But I'm happy. I'm playing volleyball... I'm having a good time.
But it's kind of quiet. So, I turn on my hyper boost (my family will know what I'm talking about) and start totally spazzing out. Making jokes, taunting the other team in that overly friendly way (guffaw, guffaw) trying to get some smiles from these people. My attempts at breaking the ice hardly even get an eye twitch, though, so I concentrate on my game instead.
Nobody seems to be having a particularly good time, and I start to wonder why some came if it wasn't for the social interaction. Like the one woman who always punches the ball with her fist, no matter how the ball is coming to her. Serve receive? Punch! Trying to set (although...there is no way she was actually trying. I'm just saying the ball came to her on the second hit)? Punch! Free ball? Punch!
I noticed a pattern that whoever's team she was on tended to lose. At first, we switched up the teams by having two people from each team switch sides. The next time we started to switch up teams, one woman asked if we wanted to choose balls for teams. Huh? There are only nine of us and it's pretty easy to remember who was on which team the game before. There stood the eight of us, looking around, waiting for someone to make the decision so I said, "sure...let's choose balls."
She runs over to her backpack on the stage and whips out a tin pan. The kind my mom puts homemade carmels in or peanut brittle at Christmas. Rather than sweet treats, the tin was full of orange and white ping pong balls. She came prepared! I jokingly asked if she served in the primary and I didn't even get a smile! Tough, tough crowd.
Balls chosen and teams decided, we started again. Puncher and I happened to both choose white balls so the next two games weren't very fun. I really, really didn't want to be that bossy lady who is trying to relive any kind of glory day by "coaching" her team. But, nobody was getting the serve up because three people were crowding into the back row and everyone thought the other person would get it. When I asked who the setter was, in hopes that someone would move up to the net, the only response was, "Whoever wants to, I guess." No...no...no. It's supposed to be the person up at the net. The person you try to get the serve receive to. Smile on the outside, screaming on the inside.
I realize I sound like I'm starring in the movie, Dodgeball, but most of the women there were really trying to play. Everyone was serving overhand (except for one person who started in a low crouch and then did some bizarre sidewinder serve) and almost everyone at least attempted to set up a play instead of catapulting the ball back over after only one hit. It was more like someone just needed to take charge, you know?
We continued on, choosing more balls every so often. After we had been playing for about an hour, a man from the stake poked his head into the gym to see what was going on. Now, this man is THE nicest man. The most pure hearted man I've ever met. Truly, one of my favorite people ever. But he went on, and on, and on.....and on about how wonderful it was that we were there playing. "Look at you guys! How great that you are here playing! This is so neat! Gosh...I just think this is the best thing!" Eventually, his enchanting enthusiasm could no longer mask his real meaning which was, "look at you out of shape women getting out of your houses to be active together! Way to go! Keep up the effort!"....but in a totally nice way.
I don't know why women don't do this sort of thing more frequently or regularly. Well, I actually do. We have husbands who have callings or jobs that take precedence. Or important and valuable family and couple time to recharge and refresh a relationship. But, if the men can sneak out of the house for basketball AND ultimate frisbee AND softball (although, I should mention Jay rarely does. He, bless his heart, always says he'd rather be home with me!!!), women should try to do something every once in a while, too, that doesn't involve desserts.
We promptly ended at 10:00. I bet most people return next week. It was a good time. It would be even more fun with a few more people. Oh...and Sarah? Someone had knee pads! And it wasn't me!

I'm laughing at the joy of an uncensored post! I love your slide show on your side bar, I'd like to know how to do that. Also, I really like that your picture in your profile doesn't have a blue frame around it. I'd put a photo up if I could get rid of that blue frame. I've notice the blue line around other people's blogs, too. How did you get rid of yours?
Awesome Lucy!
You need to make friends with the tin pan lady. Serious about the game, she's a keeper. Pan Lady must have some experience with the Puncher, coming armed with a plan to not play on Puncher's team.
I agree, I wish the group mentality of women was to choose a sport for social interaction rather than chips and salsa at Chili's. That's how we get out here.
But wait, mmmm chips and salsa.
This is such a funny post, Lucy! Way funnier than when you told me earlier on the phone. I love the pic of you in your glory days. It reminds me of my manager days..:) I am totally laughing about the awkwardness that you describe. I toally think you should bring your stereo next week and crank some SNAP!
I want chips and salsa!
Too funny, Lu! I can just see you hamming it up to no avail. Sounds like a really fun time though.
Oh, and thanks for the imagery. Hope you didn't always have to wear those awful v-ball briefs.
He he he! I may just have to come and play volleyball. Then you would really have something to write about. Let's just say my athletic ability is as good as my singing ability.
I can just hear that sweet man gushing at you. Glad you made it out last night. Hope to see you soon. I'm back in the land of the living.
OH my so funny. Good way to start the morning. Thanks Lucy
I bet you all look great!
I can't believe no one took you up on your good natured taunting! Isn't that why we play sports in the first place? Of course, I use the word "we" in only the most relative of terms. I used my marching band class to fulfill the PE requirement throughout high school. Can you say uncoordinated??? Good for you for getting out and having some real sans dessert fun - who knew that was even possible??
nothing worse that a tough crowd like that. now i am not a sports girl so i would have been on the dodgeball-esque side of the net but girl, love the story.
tinpan of balls? did i not get this b/c i am not a sports girl?
still chuckling about the dodgeball reference though...
pls go next week and blog about it? drag andrea along, too. i want to hear more!
Hee hee! I'm probably the punch girl people grit their teeth about, I have no clue how to play volleyball and just try and pretend. :) I say when you move, move to where I am, you can play lots of volleyball and our ward also has a weekly get together to go walking to to the gym or whatever, course I have never gone, I like to do my own thing where people are not staring at my behind...lol! But I would love for you to teach me the game so I do not look dorky out there.
Anywhere you go out here though, you'll find a volleyball team in a ward, it's the thing to do since they banned all the fun bunco *snicker*
Hey Barb, my brother created some sort of code to do the switching pictures. I actually don't know how to do it and I think the blue line is just part of a template. This template doesn't have one, I guess. Believe me...I have no actual programming skills! Click and paste is all I do:) But...thanks for coming and commenting:)
Alisa - to quote a great line from the movie Grease, "If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter." That said, I expect you there next week with an embroidered button up, tall hat and fancy pants!
Kelly - I said NOTHING about chips and salsa. That seems completely reasonable to have at virtually every activity. In between volleyball games...I'd do some dipping!
Andrea - come! The more the merrier, really. Besides, the more people that are there, the less Ben Stillerish I am. Way easier for me to let "it" go. :)
Carlo - I don't get the tin pan either. Believe me...it's not a sports thing I know about!
Victoria - every women's league needs a puncher, so don't be shy! That's too bad about Bunco. My sister's ward banned it too. Heathens!
I'm glad you went. I sort of forgot about it.
I don't punch, I loft, very high into the air, over everyone's heads and.....there it goes out of bounds. I think it is some kind of unconscious thing to do with being short. I may be short on the outside, but this is how tall I feel, just look at that ball go!
That story of uncensorship--hilarious. I can't say I would attend such an event, I am one of those people who hit the ball, shake my hand and yell ouch that hurt my wrist. (I am a whimp). Our stake has made attempts for a women's basketball team (another event I probably wouldn't attend) but you have to give it to them for trying.
Angie showed up and said there was 7 people from the ENTIRE stake.
And there weren't refreshments for afterwards?? :)
p.s. are knee pads bad or geeky?
I'm having flashbacks of jr high P.E., and it ain't pretty. I'm pretty sure I would be the puncher girl, or the sidewinder server girl, on the few occasions when I wasn't the Duck!-the-ball-is-coming-my-way girl.
My enjoyment of sports involves snacks, a comfy couch, and a big-screen tv.
Volleyball - it has been a long time for me! I only played in gym and in Young Women when my mom told me it was mandatory. I'm glad it is a source of fun for you - for me it is pure torture.
Keep smiling on the outside!
That is a great photo. And a entertaining story. I would have been the one taking the bait on the other side of the net and getting a little spazzy with you. But I would also be one that you would have made fun of for hitting the ball everywhere. I am a good server but that is it.
Can I just say how embarrassed I am that I wrote this censor-free post and made it seem like I am some super sports girl that wished Puncher lady had never been born? I hope nobody avoids going to play at their own things based on my remarks. Total inner dialogue. I'd love to play with any of you. At least you'd talk to me:) Or at least laugh at my lame jokes. I was just hyper that night and didn't know what to expect so...take that for what it's worth.
love the volleyball picture. You haven't changed a bit. I can's believe you actually got to wear a full pair of shorts. We had to wear those little spankies!! Yikes!!
OK, I'm back, I actually read your post this time, it was hilarious!! I can picture the scene exactly (since I witnessed it the past coule weeks. Sorry I missed it Tuesday! I would definitely have laughed at your jokes. And the crazy side winder serve, seriously, whatS up with that? She can't be serious? Was she barefoot?? I'll come next week if you go again. I had fun when I went, but your right, the social aspect is seriously lacking!!! Let me know if you go next time.
Jenny - I only mentioned the knee pads because when I went to play with the single's ward with Sarah when I was visiting her, I asked if we should wear knee pads and she mocked me the rest of the night. Knee pads are a part of the volleyball uniform so I don't think they are geeky at all. But for casual play, some might argue that point.
KariAnn - I think she had shoes. I could have used you that night, buddy! Definitely come next time so I have someone to giggle with.
Lucy, it's Julie P. and you are so busted! I was cracking up so hard, though. I felt the same way about "puncher". And I just thought you guys had figured out the whole ball picking system out long ago. Can I just say that is really freaky to "happen to have them" in your back pack! Sorry I was not partying with you. I was so darn nervous since I haven't played since HS and I realized, I never played the front row at all even in HS. But you better get your game on girl, I'm after you now!
In high school I served the ball right into a girl's head on my team. That's about how competent I am at volleyball. But oh I know the people whol like to play take it very, very seriously. Case in point! :)
I hate it when you try to suggest or organize things with a little good humor and you get blank stares or whatever responses back. Aghh!
Wish I could have been there to play with you!
That is sooo funny. My ward just started volleyball too, right before we get ready to move. Too funny. I wonder if my new ward will have it? The first couple of weeks were painful, because no one was very good. But then we got this really great player from Brazil. She set me up with this gorgeous set. I went up, spiked it, came down and broke my ankle. So much for playing church volleyball. Sigh. It's healing fast (this all happened in April), so I'm hoping to play some time soon, but we are starting residency next month and so we are moving.
I'm sorry you don't know who I am. I'm not crazy (at least I don't think so). I saw you on Dana's site. Your post just cracked me up because I felt like it was practically my story, minus the broken ankle of course. If you want to see I'm not a total psycho, my blog is momofmonsters.blogspot.com
best wishes!
