I love comments. I really do. Not the number, really, although any feedback is nice, but the ideas and validation are what really keep me coming back for more.
A few of yesterday's comments created today's post.
Barb replied: "I have decided the no-extra-charge classes at my gym are the solution. Avoidance of public humiliation pushes me harder in those classes than when I'm on the elliptical."
Melanie concurred: "I agree though, I didn't push myself nearly as hard when I worked out on my own. But like Barb, I did push myself in all the kick boxing classes. I didn't want to look like a wimp in there, ha!"
Carlo mentioned it: " i had a few months to get up to speed and then i jumped into the group classes"
Amber dittoed: "I ditto the class suggestion. I work so much harder in a class and at least at the gym I used to belong to they were 'free' with your membership."
I've been setting weekly fitness goals as a result of my word for the year - Now. One of the goals was to attend a class at the gym. I think it's been over five years since I've attended one and once you're out of the system, it's quite intimidating to jump back in.
My intimidation has several sources. First and foremost, the exact point of the group class. I actually have to work out in front of others. This includes breathing (who wants to be the hardest breather in a group?), learning some sort of routine, finding a discreet location that minimizes the number of people who have to witness the adjusting of my underwear and the usual requirement to respond to a teacher's insistence on yelling something out loud during the work-out.
Most of these intimidations are new. When you're in shape, you're not worried about keeping up. You know you can out kick, out step, out lift your neighbor. And you certainly don't worry about being the only one to stay with the "level one" move while everyone else bumps it up a notch to "level two". Underwear fit better and, of course you yell. Isn't that the point? Boo-ya!
In spite of of these reasons, and many others, my word took me to a class Tuesday night. A class called BodyCombat. Yes, it was exactly that class.
There were two instructors. Both young and nubile, both wearing fingerless gloves that made them look legitimate and tough and both requiring me to yell things throughout the workout that made me giggle. I'm not sure how to type out the "woot woot"s and "hu!" with each kick and punch. But imagine the sounds coming from the gut and in some imitation of a martial arts movie.
It was a good workout but bouncy! All the shuffling and pretend jump roping and high kicks really got me moving - and not always in a good way. The routines invariably stumped me. Me - a girl who used to learn the fly girl routines on In Living Color - could not come up with a jab-jab-jab-jab-two count hook-two count uppercut-leg pump reach-legpump reach-jumpkick-land (pause)-shuffle-shuffle-shuffle. Not once. I was never on the right leg when it came time to jumpkick and then shuffled the wrong way. Every time.
Whenever I looked in the mirror, I felt aghast that this uncoordinated looking woman, who was all elbows and bounce, was me. When did I lose my ability to remember an eight step routine?
I know I should go back. Face my demons and the ladies in gloves once more. I might even get the jumpkick this time. Better yet, I might try "level" two.
Just wanted you to know. I'm out there "now"ing.

Look What Now Got Me Into

Much like the comments you so cherish on your blog, the fun with classes is the validation you get from watching yourself get better. I've been to ONE Body Combat class, just one, because all the bouncing and hoohahing did not bring me joy. Likewise, I have been to only been to one Step class. I think I topped out at two attendances to a Spin class. Are you sensing a pattern? Nothing had any FP (Fun Potential, this time) so I didn't bother. Eventually, I found what I was looking for - a wonderful sense of belonging in Power Yoga and Body Pump (of all places). Just be patient and keep on trucking, you'll find it.
Fingerless gloves? Really, what is the point of that?! (I love your details) I got all confused just reading about those tough moves. I can't imagine trying to think about it and make my body move at the same time.
I think it's great that you chose a word for yourself and have put it into action, even if you did feel all elbows. Maybe you just need some of those gloves. :)
"When you're in shape, you're not worried about keeping up. You know you can out kick, out step, out lift your neighbor. As a person who's in shape, I have to disagree with this 100%. I still worry about this!
Good for you stepping out of the box and taking a class!
I say try other group classes...you're bound to find one that you're good at:) Good for you for attempting that class...I would have stayed away just from the name of it!
YES!! Boo Ya Lucy!
I want to try a spinning class SO bad, but what if I walk in and unknowingly get on one of the regular's bikes and then she exchanges eye rolls with her friends and then what if I can't do it and fall off the bike or my rear hurts or the instructor calls me out for something?
So I use the excuse the classes are always too full or at bad times for me. Then today I noticed spinning times have been changed and there is the perfect MWF class for me. And I know now is the time but I'm paralyzed to take the first step.
If you can bounce and kick, I can surely sit on a bike! Hoo Ya!
And for the record, I hope your Now-ing never leads to fingerless gloves.
I find gym classes like this totally not me - however, I haven't tried enough of them, wait, I can't think of a time I have actually gone to a gym to do an aerobics class - I've thought about it, but that's as far as it gets. I like to do exercise on my own, maybe I'm conditioned because I wasn't a girl used to organized sports in High School. Either way, Lucy - it's sooo great that you are tried it - I hope you go back though - you are brave :)
This is most excellent Lucy- you wasted no time! I say take it 5 times before you decide to move onto another type of class- just my two cents, but seriously- who gets it on their first time? I used to take other classes when I taught and it would take a time or two before I could get into the groove of it- so in shape or not- you gotta learn the moves.
I think you have to try a class at least three times in a row before throwing in the towel. It just takes a time or two to 'get it'. I promise!
I also loved body pump and power yoga- but I loved spin too.
You precisely described--in both yesterday and today's posts how my workouts have felt. I know that I have always avoided the classes for precisely these reasons. I don't know what it is about me that thinks I need to wait until I am as good as the instructor before I could possibly attend such classes.
A couple of months ago, I decided to just put it all out there and attended a Yoga class. I really like it--and just decided to do what my body could do and not worry about the comparison. Plus, with yoga it's all pretty slow and smooth with not a lot of 8-count sequenced to be perpetually 2 beats behind on. . .
Next up on the "go for it" list is a spin class. Good for you for doin' it NOW!
you could always spin. Spinning classes are dark. No one can tell how fast you're going or how hard you turn your crank either (that's not a sexual reference, even though it sounds like one, lol).
Good for you Lucy! Basically you just described what I was like in my first kick boxing class. I literally got kicked over while holding the kick bag for a 'tough' girl. And every time he would say 1-2-3-3-1...the punch sequence, I would get it wrong! But I did end up getting it, loved the class and went a few times a week. Now after the baby, I'm scared to go back. I'll lose my balance for sure and no way will I get the punch sequences. Oh well, such is life if I want my heart rate up. I never quit class but I always quit the treadmill. I guess that's my answer.
Love these last 2 posts!
I love the visual nature of your writing. I picture ever move.
Classes with routines frighten me still. I'm a slow, slow learner when it comes to body motion. A step routine takes me about 10 times doing to get right.
Also love your thoughts on yesterday's post...I'm with you in favor of having "people"!
Way to go girl! I know you to be one of the most coordinated people around, since I have witnessed first hand what you are capable of (shimmy shake, leg kick and so forth) I know you will only get your groove back the more you go and learn!
I have found group classes to be so inspirational, even if I am the worst one there, very few are there to judge the others: all for one and one for all!!!!
Blogging seems to create newly coined words on a regular basis. (now-ing)
I returned to step aerobics this week after 2-3 years away from that fitness class. I am totally okay at level 1 right now.
I have never tried body combat, but I'm sure that like step class the routine gets easier every time.
You had me at "fingerless gloves." Keep up the awesome work!
