My Word for 2008 - Now

I don't know if this is THE word, but it's the one that keeps sticking.

Ironically, the two words bouncing around my brain all week have been "patience" and "now".

I don't think I'm an impatient woman. But, there has been an electric current going through me lately that wants a fast forward button- to speed up time and be beyond all of this discomfort.

The discomfort of wondering if our family is complete or not. The discomfort of giving up the things I love to do because they are physically hard or the discomfort if I choose the alternative. The discomfort of knowing in the long run we will be more than comfortable if we continue to be smart and patient, but feeling jealous and immature all the same when I see others getting it now.

Here I am, on the cusp of the rest of my middle-aged life.

Do I focus on patience? For change. For possession.

or now? Which, ultimately...is all I really have.

The best time to go to the temple? Now.

The best time to mail that package? Now.

The best time to go to the gym? Now.

The best time to get my visiting teaching done? Now.

The best time to apologize? Now.

The best time to wake up? Now.

The best time to call a sister? Now.

The best time to reach out to others? Now.

The best time to enjoy my children? Now.

The best time to strengthen my marriage? Now.

The best time to get rid of my bad habits? Now.

The best time to become the person I know is inside me? Now!!

This will be a struggle for someone who can always rearrange a schedule to avoid getting up uncomfortably early, to go to the post office (tomorrow? next week? never?) or to finish a book. Someone who can justify putting things off...and off... and off until the relevancy of the thing is gone.

But the point isn't to do things the same. The point is to do things better.

Get ready....here's me pushing the publish button.................now.

You are the most prolific publisher of posts. Everytime I click over here I see three that I haven't read yet. I love, love, love your word. I think it is brilliant and timely (teehee) and will help you live and love in the moment. Good choice. Three little letters that could make a big difference.

I love your blog! You are such a great writer and have a way of putting your feelings into words. Hmmm....I remember that feeling of discomfort about wondering if our family was complete.... :) It was mostly Chris in my ear saying, "Just one more?" I am holding him to it this time!

good for you, and good luck. NOW is a great word. and when you said:

"The discomfort of knowing in the long run we will be more than comfortable if we continue to be smart and patient, but feeling jealous and immature all the same when I see others getting it now."

this is me-exactly-grrr it drives me crazy. My husband is frugal and I am worldly and un-frugal :)

Something I exactly needed to read. Great word of choice. I have been ho-humming mine to post tomorrow. I still am thinking about it.......

Oh, and I forgot to ask...you surely didn't get our overly friendly waiter again on Saturday or did you?

Lucy! I despise copying, but I just might have to in this case. I've been going around spouting an essay of description about what I want my word to be, asking my poor husband, sister, mom to condense the thought into one word. And when I clicked on your post - POW! This was it.

Hm...

Do I have your blessing to borrow? Now?

I like that word! I have been trying to do things now rather then put them off till tomorrow as well, I got so bad last year, like kept putting off calling friends and blogging, I want to be better so I am trying not to procrastinate.

Excellent choice. As I was reading your post I was thinking this may be the exact word I need but am not ready to commit to... I am pretty sure I have my word but I may need one of you well spoken girls to write a fabulous post for me.

Dang... I have NOW chanting in my head now about all of the things I put off today.

I think "now" is a perfect word. It is something I have been working on, too---not waiting to see what might happen in the future, but doing what I can to MAKE it happen now. I'll be watching your "now" progress and wishing you well!

I've got my word ready to post about but first i want to give my proper goodbye to 2007. My week of being sick has got 2008 off to a slow start.

I love the word NOW. At this point in our lives if we don't do something *now* it might not ever get done. I love the picture you found too.

Great choice! I haven't really come up with my word yet. I'm off to go scrub my toilets right NOW!!! Fun for me huh?

I think now is a great word. Very inspiring. I have to say though, I think you're a litte hard on yourself. You're awesome. We all are a little impatient sometimes, and I for one never go to the post office. I just put it off until I finally just decide not even to send the little gift, or Christmas letter, or whatever.

Love ya.

I like how 'no excuses' your word it. Maybe it can be my word for today- so much to do and I just want to do the fun/easy stuff.

I love it! I am such a procrastinator--coupled with the ability to "fly by the seat of my pants" and still pull things off. What a great mantra!

Amy, I understand the feeling. But, I'm pretty sure there is no copyright or patent pending on my word.:)

So, yes...I'd love a now sister. Please do.

Kariann - you're sweet. But I wish I was only hard on myself.

Naomi - this is me too! It's not like I don't get things done. It's that I know I have the ability to pull things off adequately at the last minute. But, that's not the me I want to be. I'd love to be a now girl. That's why I'm giving it a whirl. And hoping the "to do" aspect of it carries over to my "to be".

I like your take on "now"! I was *this close* to choosing it, as well. So many of my bad habits could be solved with this one word.

I loved your last sentence. Patience and Now are the ultimate balancing act, now that I think about it.

Lucy...my keepin' it real friend. I love this post. Thanks for articulating pretty much how I feel. I would put in my favorite quote from this post but I see that Carrie already did. I feel the SAME WAY...and then I am ashamed that I feel that way.

Ditto on the "Discomfort of wondering if our family is complete" issue. Oh...the many unwritten posts I have composed in my head about this.

You are the best!!
