Irony

i-ro-ny (n)
1. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs

Yesterday, there was much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth because I never made it to the gym.

"Why in the name of all good things did you declare your new gym-ness to all the world?" I cried in my head, with much woe.

"One day! Your gym streak lasted for one day?!" I continued to chide myself.

Of course, I always thought (but somehow knew that it wouldn't come to fruition) that I'd go in the evening when Jay came home. But then, Jay came home weary and there was the season premier of Law and Order on the DVR to watch and then I had to go to bed early so that I could get up early to go....to the gym.

It didn't help that yesterday was a one of Henry's finest. In the morning, he stepped on a tube of hair conditioner whose contents squirted out across the hallway and floor. I didn't even remember to take a picture before I cleaned it up.

About an hour later, I heard an very scary sound. Henry was gagging which led to vomiting which led to this sweet surprise to clean up.

Sorry...this is kind of gross.

Yes, he had a nickel in his mouth. I share this not to incriminate myself, because I am well past that stage, but because Henry is far beyond the point of "baby-proofing" a house.

"You could try harder," you might (probably) think.

True. We could. We should. But he's like a bloodhound for mischief. It'd be a full time job and I've already got one of those. Several, in fact.

So our days go like this, dancing from one disaster to the next and it usually ends with something like this happening.

Into the rice. While I was vacuuming elsewhere. There's that word again.

I took about ten pictures while he walked towards me crying and needing to know I still loved him. I do...but, that was good jasmine rice!

This morning, I didn't get up early to go the gym. The alarm sounded and I shut it off. Shocking...I know, but in my defense, I didn't get a good night's sleep. You see, Henry got his hands on our sleep number bed's remote control and after several hours, I noticed that my back hurt. A back shouldn't hurt when one possesses the mighty sleep number bed and I realized that my side of the bed was hard as a rock. I looked, briefly, for the remote control but knew if the numbers had changed then they had been changed by remote. And if they had changed by remote, then the remote had been in Henry's possession. Who knew where it would be.

When I finally got out of bed to look for it this morning, I found it by the laundry room and checked my sleep number. 90. I normally sleep at 40. No wonder. Jay sleeps at 70 and his was on 20. He didn't sleep well either.

I decided that, today, I would get to the gym no matter what the cost. At 9:00, I loaded all three boys into the van, filled out the necessary forms to leave them there for an hour, and made my way up to the cardio machines upstairs.

To alleviate the massive amount of boredom I experienced the first day of my gym-ness, I brought a book with me. Thus, I began the elliptical movement of my legs with my book shielding the awful clock that ticks so much slower when working out.

Determined to refrain from constant checking, I went as long as possible without even a glance. By my cell phone time (a little irony - but at least it doesn't have a second hand), I had gone about 14 minutes when I finally lifted up my book to check my stats.

Still blinking on the control panel was "push quick start to begin". I'm such a pro.

I made my way over to the treadmills and walked for 25 at a 15 minute/mile pace and continued to read. I know it's not the best workout, but I could get used to 40 minutes of reading and exercising at the same time. I didn't want to stop. But I did.

I lifted some weights, did some ab work and made my way back to the child care center to pick up my three little amigos.

First words out of the caregiver's mouth were: "Henry is such a good little boy. He kept walking around with me to help me pick up. What a sweetheart!"

Does anyone else see the irony in this?

Looks like I've truly run out of excuses.

Joy of all joys! Oh...I read this and think, "I have no excuse." No Tasmanian Devil. No lack of sleep. Nothing. And yet...

Go and workout and give yourself a break from cute Henry. There are days I go to the gym soley for the use of the daycare.

I just can't believe you're living my life.

Who needs a gym when you've got Henry's messes to keep you sweating? I'm tired just looking at the pictures.

I think it's great that you went and that Henry did so well. Makes is easier to go back, right?

Reading about Henry's antics and then seeing photos of just some of them is raising my blood pressure. I don't know how you maintain sanity with such a mischievous little guy except that he's all kinds of cute.

Your gym tales are so funny.

I'm with Andrea, I go to the gym many days just to have some alone time.

Love Henry's little face! Too cute!

Wow just reading and seeing all that Henry does makes me tired! I can't believe everything he gets into! He really must go around thinking 'what can I get into' we always said that when our dog was younger she walked around saying 'what can I chew, what can I chew?'. I can only stay on a bike/treadmill/elliptical for so long too so I usually switch among them, then it seems like you aren't on for so long but if you do 15 mins. of each that's 45mins!

I am a lurker, but I had to comment that I only like going to the gym when i have a People or Us magazine. They make the time fly on an elliptical and the pic's of Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and Demi Moore totally motivate me-who doesn't want to look as good as they do.

I am laughing imagining you on the treadmill walking WHILE reading!! That is so you. I am seriously proud of you and your gym efforts. Good job! That Henry...I don't know how you do it...but he is so darn cute. That little face...I smile every time I see it.

Motherhood is all about irony. Or so it seems at times. I never treadmill or eliptical without a book in hand. Time definitely moves faster with the reading.

I completely understand the "bloodhound for mischief" description. High hopes that yours (and mine) outgrow this need for destruction soon.

Yea for going to the gym! Reading while sweating- I so wish I could get on board with that!

I would have never know Jasmine Thai rice was all over your kitchen floor. (or vomit for that matter) I think it definitely takes practice to get motivated. Maybe shoot for 3 times a week.

Like everyone else I know that Angie goes to the gym for a break as well.

Thanks for the dinner date. I was so thrilled to finally meet sweet Henry. He is really a doll!!

So that's how you get all your reading done! Of course Henry is an angel for the childcare people. My kids' teachers can't praise their quiet, obedient ways enough at parent-teacher conferences. HA! say I. It's all a big coverup.

Dang girl, if he wasn't the cutest little toot I would think you had Dennis the Menace reincarnate on your hands....LOLOL!!

Oh the joy of a troublesome toddler!!! I feel your stress! Good for you to go back to the gym!!!!!

Go for you for going to the gym! I have done that before. Work out for about 10 min then realized i forgot to push the start button:(!

Maybe it's all in the name. My friend Emily has a little Henry who is all kinds of cute and mischief rolled into one. My favorite of his antics (because I'm not his mother) was when he dropped Emily's other son's first grade teacher's keys into their toilet.

Good for you for making it to the gym. I'm pretty sure I'd fall off the treadmill if I tried to read while on it. Maybe I'll borrow a helmet and try it. It sure would help pass the time better.

Never feel bummed out if you miss going to the gym-you've got Henry!! Oh he's cute Luc! I guess you know where to take him from now on huh? That's too funny.

At least you made it to the gym! LOL I can't read on the treadmill. If I could, I'd use it a heck of a lot more just as an excuse to get to read more. Given the choice to sit and read a book or walk on the treadmill... I sit and read the book.

You on going saga with the gym is cracking me up and I must say I love how you term it "my gym-ness". I'm glad you didn't give up.

The irony is killing me with Henry. I can't believe you can get anything done with him around, but man he's cute.

i totally understand about the jasmine rice!! that stuff is good!:)

I agree with Kelly...I could never read and walk at the same time. And then adding a TREADMILL to the mix...yikes!

I think you should count cleaning up after Henry as part of your work-out. You would definitely be 10 out of 10.

I heard this once about the difference in your children... If your first child swallows money, you rush him to the hospital, demand x-rays, whatever to make sure it's all ok. If you second hcild swallows money, you just watch for it to pass in his diaper. If your third child does, you deduct it from his allowance. Don't worry about babyproofing, he is far beyond that!
