Are You Tough Enough?

This morning, as I was combing Seth's too-long hair, he started to cry because I was hurting his scalp. I should mention that I was combing his hair so that he could go pick up his gear for football camp starting today.

I wondered.

This is my boy who believes in a hearty cry when he feels any pain. It's why, when he broke his arm last summer, it took me a few minutes to realize how serious his injury was because he always cries as loud as he did that day whenever he hurts. Then, when his stubbed toe/scratched leg, bonked head feels better, he re-emerges from his room and gets back into whatever game.

He also happens to love football. He's never played, but he knows the game as well as any 9 year-old fanatic. He understands plays, positions, and strategies. This is the sport - more than soccer, more than basketball, more than anything - that he wants to play.

But I wondered.

Is he tough enough?

The hair combing thing didn't reassure me and I warned him that he was going to get tackled. And the ball would probably hit him. He had to prepare himself mentally so that he could handle it physically.

There was some drama when it came to trying on helmets. Jay said each time he put one on or off, Seth would whimper. His hair follicles in his scalp must be awfully sensitive things. Eventually, Seth found a helmet he liked and they came home for a few hours before heading back to the field for his afternoon camp.

He shone. He loves it. He can't wait for tomorrow.

I guess he's tough enough!

Heisman pose
Dad tightens his shoulder pads.

Dad giving him his first tackle instruction.

Uh-oh.
Let's try this again....this time, go low.

Better.

Henry joins in the fun.

Hut, hut.

Go long, Dad!

Seth has good hands. He's hoping to be a receiver.

He's got the spiral but not the distance yet.

Just like brother.

I could watch this all day.

How do you feel about football? Would you let your skinny fourth grader play?

I would and I did, and all was well. We all (including me and my 1 dauther, plus my 6 sons) still love football.

Is it wrong to find Seth cute rather than rugged in his football gear? Those are all awesome pictures. Football is the best team sport my boy has ever played.

I love the pictures. Seth looks great in all his gear.

I would worry, just like you. Caleb is sometimes so tough and then sometimes so overly dramatic and when he gets wound up and cry as loudly as any crazy maniac could. He's also known to kick and yell at inanimate objects that he feels have done him wrong...like the bucket that so rudely bumped his knee. He gave that bucket a swift kick just to show it how mad he was at its actions toward him.

Caleb would also like to be a receiver and I think he may be just as fanatic about football as Seth. Wish they could play together...

I love the pictures and commentating. Its so fun to watch dads interact with their kids and the pictures it leaves behind.

Em tried out for flag last summer. She wants to try out again this year in 6th grade (they let 5th graders try out but mostly take 6th graders). She really wants to play tackle, but that makes me nervous! She is a tough girl, but still! Maybe if she makes the flag team and really likes it I will have to think about it!

Yea for Seth! I love how all that gear just makes them look so skinny and such. Since this is a sight I probably won't see with my own, I will live vicariously through you and yours!

"His hair follicles in his scalp must be awfully sensitive things."- gave me the best morning chuckle :)

You betcha, he is going to be great! His passion for the game alone will put him ahead,... Andrew turned into the place kicker and punt returner last year after the whole tackling thing wasn't up his alley! He will definately shine, I mean look at that smile when the helmet is on!

If he's anything like Jared, he will LOVE it. We actually took the plunge this year and registered for tackle as well. I just hope I can handle the time commitment and two a day practices come August!

I know I will never have a say in this one. My husband is adamant that all of our boys will play football. I have a feeling not even our boys will have a say. I'm just hoping our boys have the same passion as their dad. So far our 4 year old is showing promise and his dad is so proud:)
