After several crushes in high school, a few of my close friends noticed that I seemed to always go for the same kind of guy.
It had nothing to do with how smart he was.
It had nothing to do with religion.
It had nothing to do with money or his groups of friends or even his particular talents.
Apparently, I tended to fall for guys that had long necks and small heads.
At least that is how they were described to me. I still don't acknowledge this particular preference as I married Jay based largely on attraction and he resembles neither a giraffe nor has a particularly petite noggin.
If I seem to prefer elongated necks and smaller heads on guys, based on who I am drawn to, then I must admit that it seems I have a type when it comes to girls as well.
During medical school, one of my dear friends was Christi. She is model tall. Long legs, super slim, and chalk full of talent (baking, quilting, typing).
During residency, one of my dear friends was KariAnn. She is model tall. Long legs, super slim and chalk full of talent (photography, furniture making, decorating).
During fellowship last year, I became great friends with Amy. She is model tall. Long legs, super slim and chalk full of talent (photography, art, scrapbooking, design).
I've met a lot of very awesome people here already, but ever since we have known that we were going to live here, I have wanted to become good friends with Michelle. Since Jay and I have been married and made trips here for Christmases and summer vacations etc., I have seen Michelle and her husband John at church and just knew that we'd be great friends if we ever had the chance to be.
A couple of weeks ago, Michelle invited us over to her home for Sunday dinner. It also happened to be her birthday, which made it a lot more festive, and we met several other families as well. Last night, she called and invited me over to make raspberry/peach jam with her today. When I got off the phone and told Jay what our plans were, he laughed and said, "You always seem to find friends with more domestic skills than you." Well...he didn't say that exactly, but that's what I heard.
As for my non tall or non model-thin friends, I love you too. Remember the parable of Jay. And thank you for not describing my body type when describing our friendship. I appreciate that.

Looks like a fun day...I totally want to try your jam. Yummy! Glad you got to hang out with a cool person and make friends. You can't go wrong with a Michelle. I have a couple of them as friends and they are both awesome:)
What a funny post, Lucy. I love your twist on life.
Those teeny jars are adorable. And I'm totally cracking up at the rest of the post. Loving your words, Lucy!
That is funny. I can totally relate as all my friends here also have WAY more domestic skills than I.....I have only made freezer jam (and for the first time a few years ago!!) and it was taught to me by a friend!
P.S. When you talked about the tiny head thing I was picturing Beetle Juice in my head.....YIKES! (Although I think his neck was non-existent)
I think Michelle is great. I always thought if I lived there I'd want to be her friend too. I remember when I was graduating from high school and my first couple of years of college was when they were in our ward and she was just starting our family and I thought "I want to be like her when I grow up." I'm a little short still, I don't make jam and I don't really want to learn how!
John and Michelle were my Sunday School teachers when they first moved to the ward. I thought they were some of the coolest people ever. I've kept my eye on them ever since, and I still think they are some of the coolest people ever. I had hoped that you guys would get to be good friends, I think it's a great match. We'll be waiting for our jam in the mail!
If this happens to be raspberry peach jam with two large boxes of jello, I could've totally hung with you guys. I made 27 pints of that stuff this year. It was my summer obsession, I think we'll have jam for years.
So glad you've found some great friends!
The jam sounds fabulous!
Model-thin or not, good friends are really something special. It's so great that you've found one so quickly.
The long neck, small head thing is hilarious. And I agree that I don't think Jay has either of those characteristics. Makes me want to see some pictures of those old flames, though.
I have been off the computer for WAY too long. First, LOVE your new profile and makeover. It's so great to hear that you have connected with Michelle. I think you have tons to offer. I may be biased, but to me you are awesome!!
Those jars are way cute. I need to invite some friends over when I make jam next year, doing it with someone would be much more fun.
I am just laughing about your type though :)
Dang it Lucy, I am so tired of people only wanting to be friends with me because of my model-tall, long-legged, super-slim body! Enough already!
Nobody appreciates me for my mind.
I'm confused.
Are you saying I am or am not a pencil necked geek?
And when you say that I don't have a "particularly petite noggin" are you implying that I have a big head?"
"Look at the size of that cranium! Head! Pants! Now!"
Or are you just attracted to my long model thin legs and domestic skills too?
Long necks and small heads? I want to see photos of you old boyfriends now.
You are blessed to have so many good friends throughout your life. I feel like a lucky girl to be among them.
