for at least two days. Consider it your weekend.
I don't have much time, so my rush is your new best friend ('cause I could go on and on and on and on......and on), but I wanted to write this in the moment, because in a couple hours time, I'll talk myself down from this high horse.
But, come on....I just got my third calling.
Third.
I live in Deseret.
Given, one calling is ward organist and I only do it every other month. Another is Activity Chair and I only have to perform my duty every couple of months (but when duty calls...it is the worst kind of duty). And now choir accompanist.
The thing is, I go to choir anyway. So, it's not like this huge extra time burden. But I go because I like to sing. La-la-la-la-la. And I can always miss if it's not good for me (which I've actually been doing a lot of lately.)
I shouldn't begrudge. I'm a firm believer in giving back my time and talents to the Giver or what's the point.
But, doesn't anyone else in my ward believe this too?

I'm with you. I am all for doing my part in something, but like to see others doing theirs as well. If not, I feel somewhat used. Hope they don't become too time demanding. Have a nice weekend!
Perfectly valid reason to whine. I really am shocked considering you are in Utah, the place where Jon went 4 years without a calling and up until the day we moved people would ask if we were new.
It's just that you have talents that others could only wish for so they're putting them to use.
In the land of talented Utah there are no others to offer their musical abilities? I know the importance of a good ward chor accompanist however. It makes a huge difference in what you can tackle to sing. Good for you! and it's only 6 more months and then I'm sure you'll be back to Primary President or something:)
Sad that they are making you play instead of sing- SO SAD! I really thought 1 out of every 3 people in a ward played the piano, like it was some kind of requirement -heee. Maybe they are just maximizing your talent until your family moves.
That's what you get for being so musical, I guess!
The really frustrating thing is when it seems to be the call of least resistance "Oh look, Lucy comes every week to choir practice, just ask her to play then we don't need to call someone else."
Our generation must be full of critical slackers because piano players seem to be fewer and far between. In our ward we have two people who can play and one is our only Priest, so the kid does double duty moving from sacrament table to organ.
I always feel really bad when I hear stories like yours that I squandered away all those years of piano lessons. Oh to be released from Cubs because they need a pianist!
Blame your mother for making your practise. I am learning (as a mom) that everything is mom's fault anyways!
(But I live in deseret! A cry I will call out forever more after reading this post, even if it is a southern Alberta version of deseret.)
We need you back in our ward! We're really lacking in the music dept. That must have been difficult for the bishopric-- picking between your dueling musical talents. It just goes to show that playing the piano is a lost art.
I accept part of theblame--I did make you practice!! But you must accept the gift of talents that you've been given. Reread the parable of the talents. The blessings will come--and probably that's part of the calling.
I have three callings too, two weekly and one monthly. I feel your pain. It would have been four if I hadn't put my foot down. And it might as well be four since I seem to do the chorister's calling for her half the time.
I don't know why it's this way, but my ward is full of piled on callings. Maybe it's because the primary and nursery are so ginormous that everyone has to double up just to fill the positions?
Anyway, speaking as the choir director, I know how important the pianist is. SO IMPORTANT. And it's not a calling that just anybody can do; even people who play the piano fairly well often don't play well enough to tackle that calling. It's too bad they couldn't release you from something else, though.
My ward is huge. There are a few people that have multiple callings and I think the same thing. Why?! So many people in our ward are nonchalant about weekly attendance and only about half the people have callings. Spread the wealth. Good luck!
I'm so glad you came to book club! I love book club. And you always have such interesting observations about the books, and stories. I love hearing your stories in real life and then hearing your voice as I read your blog. It makes your stories that much more amusing.
That is very frustrating! Could you simply tell the Bishopric that you feel you are being a bit of a calling hog and you certainly don't want that?!!! LOL
I'm surprised where you live you have 3 callings, but perhaps there are others not willing to serve. I have found that a lot in places I've lived...pretty sad.
I'm annoyed on your behalf. It is understandable when you are truely in a ward where there is a need to double or triple up on callings, but come on! Utah!? The other thing that I think is crazy sometimes is that it seems like they find someone who can play the piano (or worse, the organ) and you are stuck to the bench from that time forever. There has to be someone else who can do that. Sorry. On the other hand, one of my life's dreams is to do nothing other than be the eternal piano player at church. (I'll have to take a lesson or two first.) Good luck.
Ah, your problem is that you are talented...organ and piano...every ward (no matter where you live) is desperate for these. And then they thought, "We can't just waste all of Lucy on music!" Activity chair is a ginormous job! Bless you...because the only reason you got a third calling is because you said "yes" three times. That counts for a lot. You're a believer.
Wow you have 3 callings and you live in UTAH!! I had a few callings before, but that is when i loved in Oklahoma and our ward was very very small.
You will be blessed my friend.
I hear ya! But my grudge is this. Do you remember that very time consuming (but fun) fund raiser that the young women (leaders) did? Well we were the only ones to do a fund raiser and when every other organization began falling short on money, whose money do you think they took? Ours!! I was miffed at first, but then it is the same thing that you are saying. Some people pull more of the weight and everyone else benefits.
Poor you. I say that in the utmost sincere way. Last I checked didn't you live in Utah and NOT New Orleans??
I know you WILL be awesome at it despite the pain--hey and think it's only for 5 months right?
You talented people have it rough....
Oh ya... do these callings get you out of visiting teaching? If so, maybe a worthwhile trade?
Yes, I'm wondering why you have so many living where you do. I have four! But I'm in an inner city ward in Montreal. Are you one of the few that actually play piano well? At least your talent gets to shine!
I think you're allowed some whine time with this. But I love that in the end you'll happily do whatever is required. I, too, blame it on your talents outnumber the "anyone else"'s!
I'll take one from ya! Although I would flub it big time, I am so not musically inclined in any way! I have no calling, it's been forever it seems, and I am in UT too, guess they just know I stink. lol!
Guess you could look at it as they love you, and you rock at what you do! :)
You mean, moving to UT doesn't even get someone out of the music callings? Dang. That was one of the few items on my "pros" list for the big move this summer.
Apparently I've been living with the delusion that more Mormon's per capita means more musical mormon's too.
Some Wards have more callings then members, some have members that turn down callings, and some have the same people that they rotate through the main auxillary callings. Then you have my ward, more members than callings so they create ones to keep people busy. They are calling someone to babysit my kids while I go to YW on Tuesdays. How would you like to have your name be read over the pulpit as being called to the office of babysitter for the Linds?
Very strange, but appreciated because I would otherwise have to hunt someone down each week and pay them.
You're preaching to the choir on this one, I have had 3 and 4 callings for the past few years. I never understand it because we have a huge ward (and live in Deseret...you're so funny), but it seems everyone in our ward has lots of callings. Oh well.
