Oh, how I loved conference this weekend. I remember, while growing up, having to sit for ONE session, usually of our choosing. I remember my cousin, who seemed like an aunt, having her children take notes and me finding that bothersome and goody-goody. (Whoa....I didn't even realize my attitude had taken on that tone so young in life...but yes...those are my memories). I don't think it was until college that I fully appreciated that conference wasn't this boring weekend, watching old men speak with a black background.
During my freshman year at BYU, I was in Women's Choir and the BYU's combined choirs were invited to sing at October conference. It was still in the tabernacle and being that close to the general authorities was amazing. Here I was, a girl from the middle of nowhere, seeing the old men on the black screen. But, in person, they were powerful. Their whole beings emit a special glow...a happiness...a personification of truth.
Since that experience, I have never looked back and have tried to enjoy all sessions of conference every time it's available. This whole weekend was incredible! Every talk was filled with this eye-opening common sense that made me so happy to understand and believe this doctrine. Yes, yes and yes!
And the music? How Firm A Foundation just about made my heart burst. Seriously, it was burning. I cried during the entire closing prayer.
Best of all, I truly feel that my chastisement earlier last week, at the Relief Society Broadcast, was exactly what I needed to prepare myself for many of the talks given this weekend. I couldn't believe how many mentioned how precious our time is, and how much danger there is in wasting it. I am the queen of wasting time! I act as if there is an endless supply (which, honestly, sometimes it really feels like) but was reminded that I am here but for a short time, and am with the people I love and cherish but for a short time, and need to spend that time in service and purpose.
I wasn't hurt and defensive during Sister Beck's talk, which was pretty amazing (I want to be a Mother Who Knew!) and Elder Oaks talk? Inspiring! Thank you!
So, now I seek balance and faith. Faith, because I need to practice was President Hinckley taught. That to gain a testimony of a principle, I need to live the principle. I know there will be days when I will not want to give up my time wasting ways. I've been doing it for but a week now, and I'd say of the seven days, five of them have had some major grumpy episodes. But I'm not giving up.
As far as balance, I still need to be me. I have found some, who perhaps have caught the vision and are simply trying, who alienate themselves from other women with what appears to be a judgmental attitude or accusatory tone about other family's and women's choices. That is what I don't want. I just want to keep on striving.
Thanks to many of you for your encouragement and support. Change is uncomfortable. Change is sometimes hard on relationships. But I don't think the Lord has prepared me for this change to abandon me now. I'm moving on.

All I can say is Amen!
Well there you go, something to write in your Elder Eyring hand of the Lord journal. This past week WAS all good!
Just when you needed a boost and a confirmation that your efforts were right on.
I'm thrilled for you! It was a very good few days wasn't it?
Alas, I *was* hurt and defensive during Sister Beck's talk. I came away feeling like if I'm enjoying anything about my life, then I'm not working hard enough.
Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed conference as well. I saw an overarching theme (The Truth) in the talks that I found very timely, much needed, and surprisingly blunt. THIS is the truth. THIS is why it's the truth. I loved it.
Denise, I think this is where I need to apply the faith. Because this last week, I have given up a lot of the things I "enjoy" for the greater good. More one on one time with my boys. Less "uh-huh"s and more actual listening. And, truthfully? It's hard and wearying and I have asked several people, "This is my joy? This is my purpose?"
I think, and this is my great leap of faith, that changing BEFORE the good times come, BEFORE it's even convienient or easier (like when all my kids are in school and I have the day to myself and so when they are home THEN I can give them attention and bonding time - which was my ultimate ten year plan) then the joy, the reward, the fulfillment will come. Because that's the promise. And rumor is, Heavenly Father never renegs.
This really is a huge leap of faith for me because teaching my child to wash windows, no matter how cute the visual clip she's tied in twice now, has never been how I want to spend my day.
But..I'm going to leap!
I too loved the idea of the Lord's inspiring journal that Elder Eyring spoke of.
I actually felt extremely guilty after Sister Beck's talk. And how much time I waste everyday. I for sure am not the mom who plays with her kids. Definitely something I need to work on. What did you think about that commercial when the little girl showed her picture to all the family members and everyone ignored her...so she turned to the dog. Ouch for me on that one!
Good luck this week and keep trying. I know I have a TON of things to work on for sure. This weekend surely gave me a kick in the pants (but a good one) :)
I'm just getting caught up on your blog after a few days away. I love your thoughts and think it's so great that you are making such an effort to make changes in your life. I hope you have a very successful week!
Conference was awesome! I also was inspired. Can't wait to see you soon!
sounds like you got a lot out of your weekend. i am so intrigued by the entire weekend.
Isn't conference weekend wonderful!
It took me many years to learn the value of conference too.
I have loved ready your last few posts and showing us what you are really going through with recognizing a need to change, deciding to change and then doing it!!!!!!!
It is so easy to think that you are already doing your best - and for me I definately have blinders on - I don't want to know if I can do better!!!! I like things they way they are.
But, after conference talks and seeing your courage and attitude with change I am going to have to change myself.
Thanks for sharing - you are enriching my life!
I read this post after I had written my own about G.C. I think we came to an understanding around the same time in life. Thank goodness for that! It was a great conference and I really appreciate your perspective. You get so much out of life!
Thank you for sharing this life altering transformation with us. It turly is a great challenge, and I think Satan works on us the hardest when he senses he is losing control. Just remember the feelings of discouragement are not coming from the Lord. Hang in there! We're all in this together, STRIVING to be better, to do better! I know I have so much, SO MUCH, to change and improve...but it's nice to know, with th Lord, I can!
I didn't get in the same quality conference watching that I usually enjoy, because conference came on Thanksgiving weekend this year, which was weird. (Also noisey and chaotic with little cousins playing together while I was trying to watch) but I did have the moment spoken about when I thought, "that talk was just for me".
I loved Sister Beck's talk and Elder Oaks too. It's as if they were giving me permission to do what I already know is right. We will have to discuss in person when you come this weekend.
I love that you felt like the RS meeting was a prep for conference. A softening of the heart.
Seems that we all think the talks were for us. I guess maybe we are more alike than we think and most of us are struggling with similiar things. I guess that is why we keep hearing that we should be supporting each other instead of criticizing.
Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate your candidness and need to work on many of the same things.
It just doesn't seem that you have all that much to change, maybe there are some things you feel like you need to polish a bit, but I think you sound like a wonderful person already
Loved conference, loved every minute. I wanted someone to start a wave in the conference center after sister Becks comments. I think that lady is AMAZING I want to be like her when I grow up. Loved your insight.
I too loved conference! Though I was in and out for some of the talks, the ones I did get to sit and listen to were so directed at me and my life right now! I also was impressed by the thoughts of our time here and how short it really is, I really feel an urge to teach my children better and turn every day events into ways to learn about our Savior.
I always look for Maureen, I love the Choir and I loved when they sang A Child's Prayer, My Favorite!
It's a shame conference is only twice a year isn't it?
I need the pick me up at least monthly :)
