I Can and I Should, So I Am Going To Try

And it came to pass that I said unto them that I knew that I had spoken hard things against the wicked, according to the truth; and the righteous have I justified, and testified that they should be lifted up at the last day; wherefore, the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth them to the very center.
1 Ne 16:2

Argh!!! I have been sitting here for over ten minutes trying to start something that makes sense, that will be somewhat readable, but I'm on a schedule and I'm using all of my time with the thinking...so I'm just going to start writing. Good luck making sense of any of this.

The General Relief Society broadcast on Saturday night was a mixed bag for me. I'd say, overall, as I left the parking lot I was uplifted and motivated, but during the first talk, given by Sister Beck, I'd describe myself more as indignant. If you didn't get a chance to go, you'll have to rely on my poor-non-note-taking memory, and if you did, feel free to fill in the gaping holes, that I'll no doubt leave.

I chose the scripture up top because as soon as she began her talk, I knew the days of the pats on the back and the "we're all doing the best we can" attitude were over. I've gotten very comfortable with the attitude that you can't criticize women because...well...we might have a breakdown because "we're all doing the best we can!!!" But, sometimes...especially in my case, comfort leads to complacency and complacency leads to neglect and neglect leaves us wide open to the influence of Satan.

I don't think I'm a wicked person. But, I do think Satan has been playing tricks with my mind. Little whispers here and there that my talents do not fall within the boundaries of homemaking and child raising, but rather that I shine better elsewhere. Someone with my potential cannot be content cleaning all day and creating idyllic childhoods. I was meant for greater things. Important things. Adult things.

When Sister Beck began speaking about how we cannot spend our days doing non-essential things before essential things, I immediately took that truth to be hard. "I'm not a robot!" I screamed to myself in defense. "I'm not fulfilled emotionally, intellectually, or socially that way!" I silently shouted back at the screen.

And then the "can"s and the "should"s started. She used their cadence several times to drill in her point that we women have responsibilities that we are forgetting about and that it is our part of the Plan of Happiness to accomplish them. I can and I should spend every day developing spiritual habits that will be the spiritual backbone of my home. I can and I should be better than the world at providing service and support to those around me. I can and I should make sure my children are learning the values they need by teaching them responsibility. I can and I should have a home that is comfortable and taken care of for my family to enjoy being in.

I can and I should, but for awhile now, I haven't been doing it. My days are all kind of blurry lately, with me wanting to be invisible to my kids so I tune out on the computer or in a book or on the phone and let them entertain themselves until my involvement is absolutely necessary. Then, at the interruption into MY day, MY things, I feel so...put out thinking, "I am not cut out for this!" I don't even let myself start with the cleaning and "homemaking" because interruptions and messes after I bother with that really get my blood boiling. Why bother when it's just going to end up a mess later that day? I can easily feel rage when I've spent time making a room look nice and then have my efforts undone a few hours later. I'm much less grumpy about messes when they are kept to a constant standard. I've always justified my behavior by explaining that if I cleaned all day, I'd just be yelling at my children all day. This way...we're all in a better place.

But I've been deceived. I can and I should be better. Sister Beck thinks so which means President Hinckley thinks so which means Heavenly Father thinks so. And even I know so. I do.

So, I must change some priorities. I can, should and must do better than I've been doing. For me, that means no more blogging until and unless I've complete the essential things already. I'm defining essential as:
  • spiritual (scripture reading)
  • physical (exercise)
  • homemaking (whatever daily chore I've decided upon)
  • parental (something educational, fun or bonding with my children)
This will not be easy for me. At all. I am not happy about this necessary change right now. But lately, I've been very aware of a tug-of-war battling for my identity. I think Satan has been pretty craft lately, wooing me with praise and admiration, puffing me up with pride over the non-essentials and convincing me that the essentials were boring and not worth the effort.

They are worth the effort and I am going to renew myself to making that effort. Now, onto more of the essentials. I've got Family Home Evening to prepare.

I've really been lacking motivation lately. It's great that you've made a plan to take action. I'm still just in the "thinking about it" stage. I better get busy!

Good for you. When I first started reading your post, I was like..."were we at the same conference?" I agree that Sister Beck spoke with power, it was not fluffed up or just a bunch of words. But I also felt wonderful...to be reminded of my divine worth and role. I have some goals as well, including, like you and what President Monson counseled...Study diligently (not just scriptures either), Pray earnestly (I've been so lacking in the personal area) and Serve willingly (Just reach out and do it!) Good luck. You'll be blessed for it!

I agree with so many things you have said. I'm also trying to committ to do better. I think we can do it!

Your post made total sense. Hey, I didn't even make it to the conference. It's a good thing that I checked your post-now I can say that I learned something. See, your blogging is important!!

great thoughts...I was kind of surprised about the conference, although the theme...made sense, I always take my catholic friend with me to these, because she so much enjoys them and she loves loves pres. Hinckley so afterwards, I was feeling a little apologetic, since they were emphasizing on us as a whole in a religious setting and I felt like there was some information for her there, but not really at the same time. She was really sad that Pres. Hinkley did not speak, but liked and enjoyed Pres. Monson. So I do think sometimes this talk was like magnifying our callings in a way...just a reminder to take it to all levels. I think your focusing on those areas will only make you a better person for you and the rest of your family and in turn all of us...way to go.

Very good thoughts. I have to agree, it was more of a "you NEED to be superwoman" sort of a talk. I've been guilty of the same thought patterns, but you're absolutely right about where those thoughts are coming from. Satan is cunning. I have found so much strength in the simple act of scripture study and prayer, but it doesn't make me unvulnerable to the ENTICINGS of Satan..nor you!

I have been guilty of much of the same. I have abandoned some of my guilty pleasures ( as much computer time as I would like ) for other things - like reading to my kids from the Scripture Stories Book and the difference in my own attitude has been huge.

I am so with you on this. It is a hard change. I always led myself to believe that if it was a "good" thing that it was okay. But it was not the "best" thing I could be doing, if that makes sense.

Thanks for keeping this at the forefront of my mind!!

Thank you what a great post! Although I want to be bad and hope that you don't forget about us in the blogging world, we need your posts! I know you won't stop blogging and you need to put your energies where you think they should be, just wanted you to know that I will miss your attention online.

oh my oh my...i hear you, lucy.

i love your "to do essentials" list b/f your blogging and it made me think.

i have been trying to do a few things this school year to really get things in order.

i love getting caught up with all of you and i know that there are things i need to get done too. i tug of war, as well. i have tried to do a bit of stuff and then pop in for a bit, go back to stuff and pop back in. it seems to be working, as long as i don't get sucked in

hope your break is going well. i was delighted to see a post b/c i thought you wouldn't be on for a while...good luck getting things in order.

I'm glad you took the time to write down your thoughts-because I didn't get to listen (well okay I ditched!)

I think the good think about these meetings it not necessarily to make us feel bad about ourselves or get defensive (which I totally do many times) but to take a step back and see what little things we can to improve not only ourselves but our families. Great thoughts!

Lucy, this is a great blog. I'm impressed by your new conviction. We all can relate to some part if not all of your feelings. I'm sure every woman has felt the same to some extent at some point. You're inspiring, I'm going to make some goals, and more of an effort too!

I completely agree with you - Sister Beck left me thinking I was the worst person in the world - and how could I slack as much as I do and still call myself a human being? I agree with you on her talk - buck up or buck off! Time to step it up a notch...ugh. Easier said than done most times! I admire you for your motivation - I sort of fell to the other side - uh - "you're right, I stink" and took another bite of my fudge bar that the RS provided as a dessert.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Heidi (sistah)

I think we can all relate at least a bit. I too go from over-achiever to I quit very quickly.

I hope you will be able to get your 4 essentials done so you can blog (see where my priorities lie).

My DH got home from his trip just before 6pm on Saturday night, which kept me home partly because I didn't know he'd make it home to watch the kids, so I wasn't ready to go to the broadcast when he did make it home, but then also: he just got home! I didn't want to take off. I do want to watch it online, thanks for the warning (?) on Sister Beck's talk. I'll double my efforts in the next few days before I watch it. Ha!
Seriously, though, I love Sister Beck having enjoyed her in general YW's for so long. I like her straightforward style.

Now I'm panicking that I wasn't really paying attention because I missed hearing like all of what you did. Except that families are our responsibility but I already knew that and it doesn't mean we can't still be our own person outside of mom. But I've been totally slacking on reading scriptures for months and months and more months so I heard that but guess what, still haven't opened my scriptures and I wonder where I'll fit it in so I just don't do it. Not good, but I'm still in the "pat my back because I'm pregnant and that's doing my part" mode. And I'm not ready for anyone to take that away from me so good for you to be willing to make a change!! (While I'm reading my kids are screaming at each other in Matt's room and asking me if I'm done but hey, I took them to Wheeler Farm. I'm done for the day!) Right?

OK, I think this is weird, and I know you may think I copied you, but I swear I just read your post, and there was no plagerism involved. I just posted this same thing. Maybe we are kindred spirits in the using guilt as a motivator department. Gets me off my bottom every time. That talk really did it to me as well, Sock it to me Sister Beck. I like it, and I am up for the challenge. Nice to see I am not alone.
