Publishing A Whiny Post, Even Though I Know Better

I'm out of blogging practice. Obviously, blogging is like any other hobby. If you do it often, you find your groove and rhythm and it seems to come easily. At least it does for me. If you don't do it regularly...it can be difficult and frustrating to start again.

While going four (gasp!) days without posting and coming up with this subject might seem a wee bit melodramatic to some, it's actually been over a month since I've written a "normal" post. No catch-ups...no travelogues, no book reviews...but the funnies and the furies of the day to day stuff.

These last few days, the funnies and the furies have happened like they always do (like me shopping in fugly mom snow boots with my pants tucked in and realizing there are lines that I have stepped over. THAT would have been a great post.) but the time, the words, the energy and desire just wasn't there. Last night was our ward Christmas party and I spent ALL day running around for it and the event came and went without me taking a single picture. I came home and simply didn't want to blog about it (although...right now...I am holding myself back from describing the most excellent Bob Seger-like rendition of O Holy Night I unwittingly asked someone to perform).

I met another blogger (Becky K) who was very nice and friendly, and attended a Music Makers class that Melanie does and didn't post about it.

These are the only pictures I've taken all week. Sammy had a great time, but Henry needs to practice transitioning between music props. He was a terror. But, Melanie claims that she wants us to return.

Melanie did such a great job. Can you believe she does this for free?

Last night, I outted myself as a fan of Rocky IV when it came on TV and I felt irritated when Jay turned the channel. Right when Adrian yelled "You Can't Win!" and he drove off and there was this awesome montage of clips from all the past Rocky movies with "There's No Easy Way Out" blazing in the background while he drove around Philly. I missed the awesome Siberia training scenes. The upside down sit-ups in the hay loft. Pulling Pauly on the sled. The classic "I will break you" threat from the Russian. The Russians cheering for Rocky and the Gorbachev look alike looking steamed about it (O.K. Maybe I did not need to see it again after all).

These are things I like to blog about. These details...they keep me away from the "and then I did this..." format, but I can't write like that when I've got fugly boots competing with Bob Seger in my brain. I can't choose or ignore and, finally, I give up and write nothing. After these last few days, I've started to wonder if my blog is going to go the way of my scrapbooking hobby of yesteryear. Closets full of cardstock, shrunk-wrapped and empty books, and a tote whose wheels are certainly squeaky from non-use by now. A blog in coma.

The thing is...I like this hobby. First of all, it's got to be cleanest and cheapest hobby in the world. No mess and all it costs is whatever you pay for internet! Secondly, I know there are some of you who get together to craft and create, so, perhaps this doesn't apply to you, but I can't think of anything as friendship-producing as blogging since the old quilting bee days. We come, we write, we comment. All thimble free too!

And lastly, I like it. A lot. It brings me joy.

There are drawbacks. It takes time. I can't think of a hobby that doesn't. The blogging hobby seems to expand as you get more into it. More to read. More to comment. More to write to stay connected. Time, time and time. Bloggers know this truth...if you don't write often, then people stop "visiting" very often. If you don't comment on others' blogs often...people don't comment on your blog often. Comments aren't the end all/be all of blogging, but they sure are nice. It's sort of like the carrot at the end of the publish button.

It takes thought. But, for me, that's a perk and not a drawback. Usually. Except on a night like tonight. What am I trying to say????

I don't know. I'm blogging tonight. And it's harder than it should be. And I'm not all that good with "hard".

Totally giggling at Bob Seger! I'll bet that was great. And at some point warm, dry feet is just smarter than fashion :)

I'm going to hurry and comment because sometimes you delete whiney posts after you write them before you get too many comments.

I don't know why you think every day has to be spectacular story fodder and every blog post has to be emmy worthy. The way you tell it, even these "I don't know what I am trying to say" posts touch on every feeling and mood we all have. You do a great job.

It's hard to wrap your brain around any thought at all after a ward party. Give it a week, you'll be back to your fine blogging self in no time.

I'll keep reading even if you don't post or comment often.

Music Makers, AWESOME! You have cool friends.

"A blog in coma." That says it exactly, Lucy! So many times I've thought of mothballing my blog. I loved your thoughts on it:

"but I can't think of anything as friendship-producing as blogging since the old quilting bee days. We come, we write, we comment. All thimble free too!"

So glad you blog or I'd have never met you.

Lucy,

I sure hope your don't pack away your blog hobby next to your scrapbooking stuff in the closet. I absolutely love your candor and to me it is never whining. You're great and I love you little muggle.

HAve a great day :)

I hear ya, Lucy. Sometimes I feel it, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I post when I'm not feeling it, but a lot of times I don't, and that just perpetuates the "not wanting to blog" cycle. Hang in there-- it will get better if you keep at it!

This is the stuff that keeps drawing me back to your blog. I love how REAL you are--not to mention, freakin' hilarious!

It was your volleyball vent about the ultra-competitive team mate on your "'spose to be haveing fun get together and play volleyball" night when I knew that I had found someone I could relate to.

Bring it ALL on . . . Oh, I laughed out loud at the vision in my head about the "O Holy Night" performance.

Would love to be a link . . . :)

Great post, whines and all (and I didn't even think it was that whiny). I don't know if my brain will ever recover from the ward party. I took tons of pictures and I lost my camera at the party. It is nowhere to be found. I even just went and checked the dumpsters at the church. No camera, no blog. Sad day.

First I am so glad you are back. I was just about to call and ask how you were doing. And if the Christmas ward party did you in. (it often has done that to me)

What no elaboration on the singing?? I am sure that would be a post all in of itself.

I was in a blog sorta coma last week. It definitely goes in spurts. Whether or not you have nothing to say it's always fun to see what you come up with in that brain of yours! :)

"There are lines I have stepped over." I laughed out loud at this. And the "sqeaky wheels" on your scrapbook cart. Oh my, yes!

This was a great blog, but the best (by far) was your idea that blogging is like the quilting bees of yesterday. I feel this in my heart so deeply. Thank you for saying it perfectly.

And even though this was "hard"...your brain dump was just beautiful!

After comments like those how can you quit?!

I have totally felt like this before... but didn't write it nearly as well as you did... I find the quick cure is to go back and read your archives... whiny, cheesy, boring... whatever - I can't believe how fast they have become treasures to me. I have decided it is worth the time... while it is easy to say the comments don't matter we all know they do and are in part responsible for the consistency of our blogs.

I love that this hobby is free and not messy! I have never had a hobby that can be described like that before!

Is it wrong that as soon as you announced you were whiny I was more excited to read? You can't quit, you have fans!

Wow! I can see how blogs win over email any time!

I love all of your posts. Hey, we ran into Matt and Jenny Cox at Disneyland. It was fun to see them (it's been 7 years!!!)

your slumps have nothing on some people's (me)!
I would be lost without your fun stories and pictures of the friend I never see! You'll be as good as new in no time, let those creative juices flow, take off those boots and go barefoot for a while! Hee Hee

You can't quit blogging. It is the most communication that we have.

Hey Lucy. I love your blogs, and I am glad you do it! And sometimes digging deep to find writing material results in a post that is great. I think that one of the best things about blogging is getting to see how other people think. In so many ways, someone's writing is really personal and allows you to know them better than meeting them in person.

And it was great to meet you! Isn't Mel great for doing Music Makers? I am amazed every week.

I agree, sometimes when I'm in the groove blogs come easily, but if I skip a few days or so it is harder to pick-up. Hope you get back in the groove soon, but don't ever think of quitting! I love your blog:):)

There is no way I could have said this exact thing as well as you did! I'm down to only about once a week and I hate it! My blog is definitely in a coma and with a new baby here in a few weeks I'm going to have to work at it to not die all at once.

I love your blog. No matter when or how often you post. Your writing is hilarious and uplifting. I (like so many others) can relate to your day to day 'stuff'. Keep it up, no matter how it suits you best.

And so far, this is my most consistent hobby. I've been trying to figure out what that says about me. Anti social, lazy at a monitor? Who knows but I'll take it.

You have said it all so well. I can't seem to keep up with posting or commenting since I got pregnant.

My blog has definitely had its off & on coma moments. And after those comments, it's always hard to jump back in. But where would we be without hearing about each other's fugly boots and frightening renditions of Oh Holy Night?

Blogging is one of the best hobbies a person can have, IMO. And you call this whiney?

Great post!

i love your blog, no matter what you write or don't write about.

i totally, 100% agree about the quilting bee. and i am not a quilter so i wouldn't have even been invited to that! :)

Tis the season. Don't you think that the whole holdiay thing gets in the way of blogging. Bah Humbug!

Kristen said...

You have plenty of comments that should convince you to keep on blogging, but I had to add mine. There are times in my life when I notice things are just off. This is how I tell: the Number of books I am reading. If I can't get through a book, then I know something is wrong and I need to get back to the norm, If I am reading too many books, then I know I need to face reality and take care of my family. But that's how life goes, sometimes we have to focus on the necessities, then when life gets back in order we can pick that book up again (or that blog) and enjoy it. One thing I know, even if I shelf that book for a season, I will never give up reading for life. I love it too much. I will pick it up again. If you love blogging you will get back into the flow and enjoy it oh so much. Well it looks liked I just blogged on your site, instead of commented sorry for the novel.

Definitely a mess free hobby, that's a huge perk. You're the best blogger ever. Some things come naturally to certain people, and blogging is one of your things. It's a great hobby. The best kind of jounalling for sure. And you have a huge following!!

Barb said...

I dont' know, I wasn't feeling the whine, just the reality.
" cleanest and cheapest hobby in the world " cracked me up.

Victoria said...

"I will break you!" rofl! I love Rocky movies myself, and that was a classic one!

Your a great blogger. I have no way with words, and I have lost my way for awhile, but I do enjoy it. I mostly enjoy reading everyone elses. :)

Melanie said...

I so feel you on this! I have gone weeks now without posting to my blog. Partly because I've been so busy, and partly because I've lacked the motivation and inspiration it requires to write something that others will want to read. I always enjoy your blog, so keep it up! (Oh, and that picture of me was NOT authorized! JK)

Barb said...

Thanks for your comment yesterday. I had to pull the post before my daughter read it. I wanted to spare her.

Sometimes it is just hard. There's too much to catch up on, and it feels overwhelming to start again.

I love your thoughts on the friendships blogging forms. I totally agree. I've been thinking about that a lot in kind of an end of the year reflective way. It's been an amazing part of my year.

And, lastly .... if you ever have writers block, I would LOVE to hear about Bob Seger. I laughed out loud just with the mention of it. We had an interesting rendition of Amy Grant's Heirloom song at our RS Christmas party -- complete with a programmed synthesizer (including drums!) accompaniment. It was ... fancy.
