I've been in a blogging funk this week. Thank goodness for book reviews to give me something to type! But every other thing that's inspired me has puttered out. Rather than lose them completely, here is a snippet of what could have been.
Positive Reinforcement
I don't like to cook. It probably stems from my dislike of leaving my house for mundane chores, choosing food for a week or more, putting it all away into cupboards that are unorganized and randomly arranged, realizing I don't have exactly what I need most times, making it wrong because I didn't give it enough time and I've realized most things don't turn out exactly how I expect them to, competing with my kids to have a conversation with Jay (that's immature but I'm excited to see him too!) and of course, the clean up.
But I get such positive reinforcement on the nights I do it, if all of those theories held true, I'd whip up a seven course dinner every night. The kids are thrilled with setting the table, Jay is almost giddy with delight at having a home cooked meal and time to sit and eat with his family and I lose the guilt of not providing for my man. And yet....two or three times a week (sometimes more) there is nothing on the table. Curious phenomenon.
The Babysitter
Somehow, I don't see this becoming fodder for any parenting magazine. Henry is scared of going down stairs. Going up....that is child's play. There isn't a stair, step, stool or elevation he won't master but going down has developed into an almost phobia for him.
I put out the gates at the appropriate time. Eventually I put them away when I realized that he won't dare come down. Not even with me on the steps beside him, gently tugging on him to go down backward on his belly. We call it the Belly Bump. It's worked with the other boys. But if I even reach for him to position him on his belly near the stairs, he speed crawls away. At first it was annoying because I hiked up the stairs every time he even whimpered at the top of the stairs (he is ALWAYS upstairs....they must be climbed) but now, I can leave him up there for awhile. I can even shower knowing that he'll never fall down those stairs. Well... he's fallen down once. Could that be why he's so scared?

I went visiting teaching on Wednesday night and came home feeling even more grateful for the blessings I have in my life. Stable parents who ground Jay and me and gave us the tools for success. Siblings who we look up to and enjoy being around. A husband whose job provides medical insurance for all of us. I've thought a lot about health care this week. I really should save this for another day. I have a feeling we will see a significant change in how it works in this country during our lifetime. I'd like to look back and remember how it now so I have a clear memory for comparison.
Sisters
I've had some great interaction with my sisters this week. Sarah has been keeping me laughing all week with her dating stories (agony!), I'm planning a visit with Maureen this weekend, Tara is always good for an over the phone recipe (I love her mac and cheese!) and patient with me when I keep losing them, Jen sent me a coveted CD out of the blue (love it!)
and Emily is my online friend (I can't even remember the last time we talked on the phone. Blasted international rates) who I can always count on to give me a giggle.
Remember these?
It's been awhile since I've gotten a note with a box to check. I'm not sure where Seth learned it but it made me smile. He left it on my bed with instructions written on front to "open in the morning".
I accidentally cropped off the boxes on the bottom. He likes the card games!Runners are supposed to be little. Real runners are. But it's such an easy form of exercise and burns so many calories that I keep trying it. I've been doing the Couch to 5K program but have been stuck at week 2's schedule for about four weeks now. Andrea and I went to the gym twice this week and the first time it was like running in cement. Yesterday felt fantastic. I could have kept going for twenty more minutes. I kept getting faster and faster during my 90 second runs so that at the end I was running at 6.0 mph (which I KNOW is not really fast but for me it's a damn sprint).
The problem with the entire program is the public nature of running on treadmills as I do not own one. What to do? Walk discreetly, as to not draw attention to the pound of each footstep and save a little face? Or run like the wind, shaking the gym with the gyrations of the treadmill but making it a little more likely to eventually be at a size that does not cause a scene? If I had a million dollars....I'd buy me a treadmill....and a house big enough to have room to put it in....and some fancy pants to reduce friction.
Bye, Bye Birdie
What do you get when you mix 20 teenagers, a vocal coach who has never seen or heard the music before and a pianist who doesn't sight read all that well? A very, extremely, almost-too-much-to-endure, long two hour rehearsal.
I agreed to help out with the stake musical. I didn't want to get completely drawn in so only agreed to help out with the music one night a week. I was told that I would be taking small groups and soloists aside and helping them with their production, sound and overall musical performance. I went last night, stood in the back for about ten minutes while the director talked to everyone about schedules etc. and then heard her say that she hoped Sister Johnson showed up. I shouted out that I was there and she clapped and did a little jump. Confused, but pleased that she has so much confidence in me, I came up to the front awaiting her instruction. But there was none. She just turned it all over to me and left. And there I stood, looking at bored 12-17 year-olds, and a few adults who somehow expected me to teach them their music. Brutal. Guess I need to find out what Bye, Bye Birdie sounds like.

Love the purge! I cannot believe you are doing Bye Bye Birdie. I am sure it will end up being fun, but seriously are you in charge? I am loving our little runs at the gym. I say go for it. We should always try for the two treadmills by the window. Complete priavacy to run like the wind.
I'm no exercise expert, but I completely understand the awkwardness of running on a treadmill in public (I hate it, but for different reasons than you). I have found though, that using an eliptical machine relieves most of that anxiety. While the workout isn't quite as good, perhaps you could make small adjustments to the lengths of the intervals and/or speed to compensate. At least until you feel comfortable back on the treadmill.
Maybe I should take my own advice and start using the eliptical again instead of following the couch to couch exercise routine!
You could have saved all those for a week's worth of mini-posts! :)
Oh the shame of a stay-at-home mom who doesn't make dinner. I try to make it a few nights a week, but every night. I just can't do that.
I too have wondered about the future of healthcare. I suppose there is nothing to be done but see what unfolds.
Oh those blasted treadmills. I hate them. I started running in spring and it's so much nicer to run outside. I thought for sure everyone was laughing about how slow I was running, but who cares. Now I'm pretty good and 2 sizes smaller so it's worth it.
Hang in there on the treadmill!! Who cares what the other gym goers think anyway. I am on it huffing and puffing with a face as red as a tomato and I don't care. I am there to exercise and to heck with all of them!! ;)
Bye Bye Birdie!!! Wow! I can't believe they turned it over to you. They are lucky to have you and your help in ANY capacity!!
I just have to add my two cents on the running. I will say I am NO expert for sure, but when I first started running I couldn't even run 1/4 of a mile without seriously DYING! Hang in there, it does get better. I have no advice for treadmills. I really dislike them. I feel it takes me forever to go the distance and I stare at the darn ticker the entire time!
Poor Henry. I am sure he will over come the fear soon. Maybe it is a fear of falling. However I think Weston has fallen down the stairs literally 5 times and still goes down them. I am wondering if he doesn't have any sense after that?
As for dinner--dinner sminner. I have stunk lately in that department...I hear ya when you do make the effort though. :)
You are so lucky to have so many sisters. I have a very good relationship with mine (but I only have one).
Purge away....love the posts. I've also enjoyed your book reviews and know you've enjoyed spending your time reading this week! Glad you liked the CD:) Sarah's stories are pretty funny, huh?
The dinner thing is so true! I didn't cook at all this week, but with good friends and restaurants and kids who like mac-n-cheese, we survived:)
Oh man, I haven’t figured out how to love dinner at our house at all. At least you are getting positive reinforcement. I don’t believe the hype about families that eat dinner together are better equipped, or whatever. It cracks me up when after a really bad meal, (the kids not my cooking) my husband will say “Oh yeah, THAT’S going to keep our kids off drugs!”
I’ve said it before, and shamelessly say it again, Dora is my babysitter.
My husband has Crohn’s disease. I am so grateful for his current good health, it is nothing short of a miracle and I recognize it as such. We have had years of not so good health and might again someday, but for right now saying thanks for this miracle is the first thing I pray about every night and it isn’t a vain repetition, my gratitude is on my mind every second of the day. (I’m totally tearing up as I write this so maybe there is a longer and gushier post about this topic in my future too.)
Oh my gosh, I love my sisters! I talk to them on the phone at least once a day. I was thinking recently how I would like to develop the same kind of relationship with my brothers wives as well. I love my sisters!
Seth is cute. I hope you checked YES.
When you are at the gym do you stare at the other exercisers and judge, or do you think “good for them, it ain’t easy, but here they are!” No one is watching you, they are too busy wondering who is watching them so pump those legs and shake the floor!
Good luck on the musical! Yikes, I thought road showy things were done away with? At least the Bye Bye Birdie songs are kind of catchy (in a Disneyland “It’s A Small World” kind of way!)
Lots of great thoughts - thanks for sharing.
Oh.my.goodness! -- in regards to the play. You need to say something. You are a busy Momma and wife!!
I *loved* reading about your life this week!!! I envy your situation with all your sisters! How fun for you!!
That is the sweetest note from Seth, I hope you had a chance to play with him!
I agree with Jenny. It does get BETTER Treadmills, I HATE them. SO boring. I like to run outside. I ran today in the rain. So nice!!!
That is so great that you and your SISTERS are so close. I wish I was close to MINE.
Have a great day.
Wow- lots of fun stuff today!
Loved your running on the treadmill visuals. I don't like to run in public myself. Luckily the treadmill in the basement saves me from the humiliation but it just isn't as fun as running outside or where there is something else to look at instead of junk that needs to be put away. I need a running buddy I think.
Dinner: YUCK! I love to cook but I hate to have to cook. It is a pain and I do feel terrible when I don't. LUckily I Love my crockpot and I am getting better at "easy" meals.
Good luck on the play-- funny how that happens when we look around and notice somehow we are now "in charge" of something. You will be fab, I am sure of that!!
KellyA has made me teary and that is so crazy but her words are so sweet.
Love to read about good sister relationships. Wish mine were better. Hope my girls have better than I have...constant worry of mine.
PS- How is Jay feeling?
If I go three or more days without cooking dinner, Devin will look at the stove and sigh. It usually makes me feel guilty, but sometimes I get ornery! "What?! There's plenty of peanut butter and jelly! Help yourself! And you're late again!" I know not very supportive. Ah well.
I love the note from Seth! He is such a sweet boy!
Bye Bye Birdie? Ann Margaret right? Good luck!
So exciting to see you are reading For Whom the Bell Tolls. That is one of my favorite books of all time! Can't wait for the review.
Love the snippets...and love that I get to be one of your sisters :)
I think I have finally found the joy in meal making...keeping it simple most weeknights and homemade pizza every Saturday, then I can be creative a couple nights a week when I have time.
And don't give up on the running! It will get easier, I promise and before you know it you'll no longer be "the big girl." :p
Lucy-
I wanna be your best friend! Do I have a shot?
Aaron and I were reading this post and we were both cracking up. We love your sense of humor and Aaron said these guys will be an awesome addition to our Dinner Date Group!
Cannot wait for you to get here!
Love the mini posts! It does feel good to purge though. Hope you have a great week!
