I don't know how to write this because I'm going to look bad. In addition, other people might get their feelings hurt. Which is really not my point. Just keep reading. You'll see.
I was introduced to blogging through Jenny. I had never heard of a blog as a means of keeping in touch before May of last year. I had only heard the term "blog" in regard to news, Drudge report, election fodder, etc. When Jenny told me about hers, I read it for two months before I jumped in. At first I felt like a voyeur. I didn't have an account or anything and didn't know how to leave comments so just read without her ever knowing. It also never occurred to me to read any body else's blog.
I started blogging in July and went through that honeymoon phase where you read EVERYBODY'S blog. That was when I first learned about the catch phrase "good mail". I was impressed by everyone's thoughtfulness but also scoffed at the amount of time, expense, effort, and energy that went into all of it. As I wasn't involved in it, it was easy for me to be judgmental reading post after post about people's new treasures. I guess I thought it was a little showy. I can't believe I just wrote that and am sure I'm going to some kind of blog outer darkness for admitting it, but it's true.
If I'm playing the honesty card, I will also admit that the reason for my scorn was probably due to my own weakness and laziness. I'm a lazy friend. I love my friends. I love my family. But I am low maintenance and generally treat my loved ones the same way. It's like the jocks that make fun of the kids in math club. They make fun of them because they know they aren't smart enough to be in it. They might not know that's why they are making fun of them but if they really soul searched...
I knew immediately that this was a group that I couldn't be part of. I'm not cutesy. I'm not crafty. And let's not forget that I'm lazy. But I think I already mentioned that.
I mailed Jenny something this week. Nothing cutesy and certainly not crafty. In fact, nothing is a display of my skills unless you include driving through a drive-thru a skill. And I didn't consider it good mail. It was a good, old-fashioned care package and it took me three weeks to actually mail it. When I mailed it, it felt incredibly good. And the excitement I felt about her getting it felt even better.
Meanwhile, an unexpected package arrived at my doorstep yesterday. I opened it and it was the nicest card from Kelly with a gift card to Red Robin (which is our family's favorite restaurant). She said that she wished she could bring me dinner during my busy week but was using Red Robin as an alternative. And she seemed genuinely proud of me for this choir thing. I was very touched.
Today, a package from Dana arrived with an absolutely stunning, black onyx necklace, some lotion, candy and card. Pure kindness. It almost leaves me speechless (but not fingerless - I can still type!).
These are two women I barely know. I have no idea what Kelly even looks like. But, as Sally Field so eloquently said years ago, "They like me! They really like me!"
And the Grinch's heart grew three times today.
Thank you. You are beautiful women.

That's so nice! I can't wait to see that pretty jewelry on you this weekend. Consider yourself blessed:)
I knew I liked you! I had soooo many of the same feeling you did about blogging and good mail. I am NOT crafty or arty. I can't sew, make quilts, or am a Mormon :). But, like you, as I really looked past all the fluff, I realized most were just like me. Moms, wives, friends. We have good and bad days as moms, wives, and even as friends. And isn't giving good mail, as small or large as it may be, so much fun!
Enjoy your goodies!!! You deserve them!!
YAY! It got there in time for your WNBA debut!
You are going to knock their socks. You, just a plain ol' ordinary stay at home mom! BWAH! ;)
I think you have some great blog friends. "Good mail" is so much fun and it makes everyone (the sender and the receiver) happy. Maybe I will see you this weekend. I know Jen is very excited to come up.
Gorgeous necklace! I can't wait to see it in person. How kind of Kelly to send the gift card to Red Robin. Yum! I like your analogy about the jocks and the math club.
It never occured to me that you didn't know what I looked like. People say Quincy and I look freakishly alike, so I look exactly like Quincy give or take a couple hundred pounds and the devastating effects of peri-menopause.
I was going to attach a note saying don't blog about my ditty as good mail because I didn't want to look like a groupie or joiner;(you will also notice the card is not home made,) but, that would have been stupid because the thoughtful, nurturing sentiments are my own and that is the real spirit of good mail. I've been sending it my whole life, just didn't know it had a name.
I have only been to Red Robin once. This summer we were in Seattle and went, I totally dug it! I can't get my family to go back though because my husband doesn't eat meat, my kids only order nuggets and they can get those anywhere. Pshaw! what do they know about cuisine? (Plus our RR is in a questionable part of town so it just doesn't draw us in.)
And I AM genuinely proud of you. It makes me happy to see mom's use their talents outside of their normal duties of home and family, especially when it is harder to find a showcase for those talents. As much as I cherish being a wife and mom it is a delicate balance to remain a whole person on the inside and I am the champion of women who step outside their box and try. It struck a nerve when you said the lady was snotty about not wanting "just some mom" and I was proud of you for having the guts to go through with the audition.
Good luck this weekend, I think it is super cool!
*Oh, did you want your blog back?
Yeah, I can relate about what you said about blogging, the honeymoon phase of reading everything and good mail. I like your honesty!
So, I read Jenny's blog and then one of your old posts. Are you taking Financial Peace University from Dave Ramsey? My hubby took one of his Seminars when he came to Denver. He has so much great information. We have his books and his cd's, etc..
Also, where in Montana are you from? I'm from Libby. Interesting.
Oooh and that necklace set is so beautiful!! Dana makes great stuff!
Can I say ditto? Or is that lame? I often chuckle about good mail because Doug and Greg jokingly said oh, you mean the one up club? Don't worry you won't go into the outer darkness of blogging. However, I think if I wrote that I may. I am glad you received some great mail this week--especially being single as well.
You scored on Red Robin and awesome necklace from Dana!!
Kari,
Yes about Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace. We just finished week 7 of a 13 week course. I've really enjoyed it and it's changed my habits, for sure. Now, if Dave Ramsey could just create a diet!
I grew up in the big city of Helena. I've never even been to Libby! Thanks for your comment:)
Kelly - I've missed you! I'm glad you're back wherever you were. I've grown quite attached.
I clicked on you from Jenny's blog and have to stop to say that I love your family picture on the sidebar. Perfect, indeed.
What great surprises you have this week. How very nice to feel the love of giving and getting good mail. Isn't it great?
I loved your honesty in this post. I have written my comments twice but decided to just delete them b/c I did not want to hijack your blog. A future post of my own I suppose!
Lucy, are you taking FP at the church? The LDS Church? Interesting. Where do you live, is it the Tri-cities?
I cannot believe we have lived in SO many similar places. And yes, Helena! I knew some girls at Ricks who were form Helena - there names were Beth and Monica. They were 1 year younger than me, so they wouldv'e graduated HS in '92.
They were roommates with one of my other friends.
Wish you were coming to Denver, then we could'a had a Denver Blog Reunion!!!
Lucy,
Your post is one of the reasons I just LOVE you!! I truly admire your honestly and sense of humor. I am thinking of you today and sending you lots of good vibes for tonight!
Beautiful necklace from Dana and so sweet of Kelly to send the gift certificate. That's what I love about blogging... you find out that you aren't alone in the world...there are lots of other people who are a lot like you and it gives you an opportunity to share with others!
I found you through Dana's blog. I appreciate your post, but I am sooo happy to hear that you have now seen the power of good mail. It's really not about getting a present in the mail... it's about the feeling you get when you give and recieve it.
You mean my honeymoon blogging phase will end? And I will rediscover reading and cleaning my house and all the other things that used to fill up my days? And no doubt offend people when I frequent their blogs less often. Too bad you don't live next to me. I want to borrow that necklace! :)
