This book is really best read without any prior knowledge about it. I picked it for this month's book group and we had a pretty good discussion about it. Andrea said it best when she said that while reading the first page, she thought the word "carer" was a misprint and that they meant "career". My favorite thing about this book is the writing. Not the choice of words but the view of the world the writing gives the reader of this story. It is so unfamiliar, so foreign that it takes awhile to figure out what is going on. But the author is in no rush to placate the curious or the impatient (are you a patient reader, Kristen?). He takes his time getting the reader accustomed to this strange girl, Kathy H. and her strange world.
Once I figured out what was going on and started to digest it, ethical questions, moral dilemnas, and the irresistable urge to compare it to real life debates floated around in my thoughts for a good week. I knew this would be a book I wanted to discuss with others and the book group didn't disappoint.
We had a fun time, as always, and had great food. Andrea made soup and served bread. She also replicated Starbucks Carmel Cider with whipped cream. Good stuff. We stayed late and I'm paying the price today. Andrea has such a beautiful home and it was a great relief to get out of mine. I received badly needed sympathy to my remodel woes and laughed with everyone at some hilarious video. Alisa clued us into this gem. If you ever need to lift your spirits, watch this. Maybe that's why the germans love him so much. Are they a particularly happy people?
O.K....to be fair he seems to be poking fun of himself. Here's one that really shows off his extraordinary talent. Mind you, the words "hit single" do appear in the same sentence with the title of this song.

Ahh, David Hasseloff. Always good for a laugh.
Glad you had a fun night out :)
Hasselhoff. Pardon me.
Most amazing video I've seen in years. This is hilarious. What are the masked things that keep bouncing along the bottom? How do you fly with your feet hanging down? What is the purpose of the cherubs?
I just called Jason up from downstairs so he could watch the David Hasselhoff vids. We were dying. The 2nd one is worse. Creepy cherubs and creepy David. I feel like I need to take a shower after watching that!
Andrea
Great video. I had no idea that he sang that. Thanks for the laugh I a weeping weanie today :)
Oh my gosh, I haven't thought of David that way in a long time, thanks for helping me reconnect my feelings with such a stud.
I love this blog thing, thanks for getting me into it!
