Hair Hell

Dante wrote that there were nine circles of hell.  For the past month or so, my hair has been in level 4, at least.  Contributing to this depth of suffering were pains like five months since my last cut and color, more grey hair than ever, freakish amounts of post pregnancy hair shedding, hair the perfect length for Daniel to grasp and hold onto with his vise grip and a very, very unfortunate bang burn compliments of my CHI flat iron.

Due to my ability to mask some of the problems (bobby pins tried their best with my bangs but it was a difficult job), Daniel’s refusal to take a bottle, lots of medical bills to pay off which sucked dry our disposable income and my embarrassing complacency to be a frumpy mom, I have put off a much needed hair appointment.  When I finally called the salon in order to schedule something on one of Jay’s days off, I learned that the girl I’ve been to the last two times is in China for a year.  So, I went with Walter, who happened to answer the phone and who I’ve since discovered is quite possibly the loudest talker in the entire world.

Walter was kind about my 4th level of hair hell and said he’d put me in paradise with a new cut and color.  I had pinned a haircut I liked of Sandra Bullock and a color example from Sienna Miller and he was impressed with my technology.  I should probably mention that Walter is 59 years old.  Not that he was old old.  Just...a different generation, you know?  In other words, I’m not sure the pictures helped much.

I do not look like either of these women

He put foils in for highlights and then colored the rest with what he called a dark gold and I swear, the lights in that salon made it look pretty.  I told him probably five times while I was there how much I liked the color.  Gone are the brassy blond streaks with dark roots.  Gone are the grey streaks increasing in number at the temples of my head.  The bangs...well...they are short.  But they have to be.  There wasn’t a lot he could do about that.

I was enjoying this new head of hair until my son, Sam, looked at me with an odd smile on his face and said, “Mom.   You look different.  Your hair is orange.”

Gah!  Worst sentence ever.

I went into my bathroom and indeed, there is an orangish hue to my hair.  The kind adjective is copper but I can’t call him a liar like I wanted to do.

What level does this put me in Dante’s Inferno now?  At least limbo.  I’m not out yet.

Hair hell really is the worst. One day (ask Jane), you'll be able to laugh at this even more than you do now. I'd cast that uh, copper right away if we were closer. You're the best Lucy and definitely out of level 4.

(Yeah, ask me sometime. Melanie saved my bacon.)

I love your new cut and it doesn't look orange on my screen, it looks sunkist. Your beautiful eyes will always capture all the attention anyway, so I say hair is gravy in your case.

What? You don't like Sandra Bullock? I love her characters.

Oh gee. Gaffe's on me. I thought you said, "I don't like either of these women," not "I don't look like either of these women." I must have been too busy looking at your eyes in the next picture. Sorry.

Bang burn and nine levels of hell... I can relate to those this week. I got my hair cut, too, she did her best with my bang burn and it's amazing how a new haircut can lessen the level of hell. I think next time I'll spring for a color, too. ;)

I love your new cut and color, though. Doesn't look orange at all.

I was expecting much brighter "coopery" hair. Get outt in the sun in the next little bit and it may turn a little more golden :) you look fabulous though!

I have to say, your hair doesn't look orange at all to me. Maybe it's because you cleverly posed against a cabinet with an orangey stain, so your hair looks less orange by contrast? At any rate, I think it looks good!

Love the bangs and cut. I really don't think it looks orange at all. A few washes usually tones down the color. I like it! :)

It doesn't look orange on my screen either. At all. I think it looks great!

The color looks great on my screen, and the cut is super cute! Perfect for summer coming.

Your hair doesn't look orange on my screen either, and I'm sure it is calibrated perfectly to the human eye. But, I will say that the first day or two when I get home from a new hair color, my hair seems more orangey than I want it to, but then it somehow mellows or fades or whatever it's supposed to do. So, maybe that's what's going on with you.

I can empathize with the bang burn. I did that with a hair dryer that malfunctioned, suddenly blowing out white hot air, a couple years ago. All of the sudden my bangs were white in one spot, and as I went to touch them to see what it was, they fell off. Horrifying!

Your hair looks pretty and fresh on my computer! I have tons of pesky greys already (my personal version of hair hell) and I've had many color mishaps in the last few years. Mostly self-inflicted though. :) Just use a cheap shampoo and it will fade fast.
Walter sounds like quite the character!

I am in hair hell myself right now. Over half of it has fallen out and two MDs and a naturopath have all told me it is just part of growing older and having a baby. say what? My baby is 18 months old and I want my hair back! I have had all kinds of labs done, tried vitamins, etc with no change.
