I have spent the week hoping to catch a bug.
The flu perhaps.
If not the flu, then maybe just a bad cold.
Surely there is someone out there with a contagion I could catch with a lengthy handshake or having them cough on me.
But I'd need a fever for it to be legitimate.
I suppose I could handle chills and a rash as well, should further proof be necessary.
However, I don't want any stomach issues. I've vomited daily through three pregnancies to ever wish for that.
O.K.
One time.
I'd be willing to vomit one time.
Pretty desperate, eh?
You see, if I was sick....really sick....I could legitimately get out of participating in this blasted sprint triathlon I overzealously signed up to race in this Saturday.
I started swimming in February to complete an activity for a family exercise challenge. I liked it so much I kept at it. Another month, I tried out bike riding, an activity I hadn't done outside on a real bike as a form of exercise in over a decade. While my reaction to that particular sport was much, much less enthusiastic (remember, the bike seat and the heel of a stiletto use the same principles of force and pressure), knowing the old adage "Just like riding a bike" was true - you do remember how - birthed the idea of doing the local triathlon on August 7th.
"Months away!" I thought.
"Plenty of time to train!" I reasoned.
Now the confession: I was in better shape two months ago than I am now.
I don't know what happened, specifically. We moved, the boys were suddenly constantly around, I started sleeping in, it got too hot. Blabbity, blah, blah. Summer seems like an ideal time for exercise and healthy eating. Why I haven't managed to consistently do either is not only frustrating, but devastating for a girl who is signed up to consecutively swim, bike and run in three days time.
For multiple reasons (fear of letting myself and others down, fear I'll never try again if I don't try now, fear that I'll have this failure gnawing away at any goal I set for myself in the future, plus the much more important reason that I actually think I can do it, albeit very slowly), I am going through with it.
The triathlon, that is.
Who'd have thought choosing health over sickness would cause such hand wringing?

Sickness Or Health?

Sorry, no one in our house is sick right now or I would send them over to cough on you or something... :)
I am SUPER excited for you to do this though! I think it is going to be great!!! And yes, it is very easy for me to be enthusiastic for you because I am not participating myself. heehee
You go girl!!!
You are going to do great. Great, I say!!! Just pace yourself, and keep your mind in the game. I am excited to hear how you do!
Good luck Lucy! I am sure you will do great. I would be in your exact position had I signed up to do a triathlon.
Wow, Lucy. Just wow. I'm very impressed and excited to catch up with you after the event. It's just super impressive to me.
I'm pretty sure I have walking pneumonia, but you don't want it. You can do it! You'll feel so good afterwards, and maybe it will be motivating for you.
Ok Loose..you need to trust me on this one. You will be stronger than you think. The first triathlon I competed in they screwed up on the swim part and it was 3/4 of a mile, not the standard 1/2! I can't swim well (I don't even put my face in the water!). On the bike ride I made up time and on the run you can do something crazy...like walking if you have to! You will be awesome at this. It is such a great feeling. Oh...I also ran my first 1/2 marathon 2 months after my tummy tuck. It's all in the mind. You are a rockstar, you just need to prove it to yourself this week-end! I will be thinking of you and look forward to the update!
Take a deep breath- you can do this! You are enough! You won't be breaking any records, but you will have the satisfaction of pushing through for you. Go slow, enjoy what your body can do, the limits you can surpass. Running a race when I wasn't ready was this starting point for me because it made me realize all that my body really CAN do if my brain doesn't get in the way.
Can't wait to read you post-race report!
I totally get these feelings of fear and what the ___ did I get myself into. I thought that about the 1/2 marathon I was going to run last summer. The sad/interesting part is I really did get injured and wasn't able to run. I admit there was a bit of, I can't believe i got out of that one, but there was a bit of saddness as well. I am let down I didn't get to do it because now I don't know if I ever will.
You can totally do it and I'm so glad you decided not to give up. You'll be awesome and in the end you will be so happy you did.
I think it's great that you're doing it. Even when I'm really prepared, a big race still turns me into a nervous wreck. But that sense of accomplishment will be far better than any kind of sickness.
Good luck, I'll be thinking of ya!
I'm super proud of you and will be cheering you on!
