I've never been a snow hater. Sure, it slows things down. It's cold. It's wet. But, in a way, it soothes me. I love the way the snow muffles the surrounding sounds and how it blankets and softens nature's lines. Mostly, I love the hot chocolate it gives me permission to drink and justification for climbing into a steaming hot bath. For those reasons, I wasn't dreading the forecast predicting snow everyday this week.
It began yesterday about the time I picked the boys up at the bus stop. The roads were covered in a mere skiff then and, as I didn't leave my house again, enjoyed a pleasant chili dinner, helped the boys finish their chores and once Jay got home, spent the evening wishing, hoping and celebrating when Jay learned his team earned its way into his work's fantasy football superbowl (Thanks Donovan McNabb!).
Jay was on call last night and although the evening was quiet (only one call came in before 11:00) the ER called him at 3:00 AM with a patient who needed an emergency procedure to save his leg (or foot. The loss of either warranted haste on Jay's part).
The series of phone calls between the E.R, the surgeon and Jay took me in and out of consciousness but it wasn't until the garage doors kept opening and closing and I could hear Jay's fretful conversation on the phone that I finally became aware of Jay's snowy plight.
At 3:00 AM, none of the roads in our neighborhood had been plowed and Jay couldn't get out. He tried his car first and got stuck. He abandoned it on the road in front of our house and came back for my van and got stuck again, this time even further from the house.
I wasn't the only one alerted to Jay's comings and goings. Henry also woke up and in an attempt to get him to go back to sleep, I cuddled with him in my bed all the while wondering what in the world was going on.
Finally, at 4:30, I put Henry back in his crib, went down to the garage and found Jay out in front of our house digging his car out. Ignoring his protests, I put on some snow pants, my boots, a hat and gloves and took turns shovelling a path that would allow his little Volkswagen Passat to recover in the comfort of our garage.
By 5:00, Jay's car was in but he had long before called another Radiologist in his practice to handle the emergency procedure. If you know Jay at all, you know making that call and asking for help was the worst part of his long, cold night.
We got an automated call at 5:30 am, telling us that school was canceled and when Seth and Sam woke before 7:00, I told them to be as quiet as possible and go play the Wii. We both woke up around 9:00 feeling like we'd been drugged. It was a rough night.
Jay immediately set out to go rescue our abandoned van about a 1/2 mile away and was pleasantly surprised by John, Michelle's husband, and their oldest son, Gabe, with a heavy truck if he needed a tow and some extra shovels. As they don't exactly live next door, it was beyond nice of them.
The van made it home and the day has felt like a preview to the upcoming two week Christmas vacation. Fun...but hard. I think the boys have had a good time playing outside. The plows came and created a perfect sledding hill and I smiled as I watched them enjoy their Winter Wonderland from the warmth of my living room window.
Jay had signed up to ring the bell for the Salvation Army at a local grocery store several weeks ago and nearly froze after jing-a-jangling for two hours. Seth is there now, with his Cub Scout pack, and I am dreading heading out on the icy roads tonight for a RS presidency meeting and concert.
That hot bath will have to wait until later.

Holy Snow! I haven't listened to the news for days and and no idea other parts of the country were like this.
I also haven't seen a single Salvation Army jingler this year. Glad for the picture of Jay. NOW it seems like Christmas!
Wow Lucy...reminds me of our days in Montana. We received just a little bit of snow and the city is ready to shut down!
You're right. No Salvation Army! What the?????
I would love a call saying school was closed. We had enough snow last night for an accident this morning that made the kids 30 minutes for school. No complaints since we weren't part of the accident.
The sledding pictures are great... my kids would love that!
We've had delays the past couple of days and the kids are loving the snow. It doesn't look like the same amount, but it's still fun. So maybe time for 4 wheel drive? That makes for one CRAZY and COLD night. SO sorry! Love the pics and you!
What a crazy night! That is totally true love that you were helping at that crazy time of the morning. Looks like the boys were enjoying the snow....Jay looks freezing!
Ah, the joys of being on call! I'm glad the boys are enjoying the weather and that Jay was safe, even if frustrated.
I was just commenting to Chad that all the Salvation Army bell ringers out here appear to be homeless and playing with less than half a deck. Most of them smell bad and are actually just sleeping with a bell in their laps. Jay puts a whole new spin on things. Good for him.
Having got stuck getting in and/or out of my driveway several times last year, I have much sympathy. And I wasn't even trying to get somewhere important, like the hospital. Poor Jay!
I like snow, but I wish it would stay in the mountains and on the grass where it belongs. Leave the roads and sidewalks alone!
That's a whole lot of snow! And how long does that last? I couldn't take it for long.
I wish our school would do automated calls. Instead we have to get out of bed and look at their website, or listen to the radio, neither of which allows for the staying in bed aspect. Ugh.
And that's why everyone in Durango has a subaru instead of a minivan! Too bad my dad sold the jeep. That thing was awesome in the snow. I especially loved it when it was cold and it wouldn't idle so before I came to a complete stop at a light, I'd throw it in neutral to keep the engine revved. What fun.
wow what a night you had. YOu are such a sweet wife for helping your HUBBY!
Hmmm it may be time for a SUV! :)
It's so white & clean & bright! I love fresh snow. And kids do think it's magical.
Holy moly. Crazy night indeed. Glad it is behind you! Good luck with the 2 weeks of vacation. We start ours today.
I'm with you, I love the snow. Sorry it caused you a long sleepless night, though.
Even though I prefer the warm crashing waves, it was fun to come home to a winter wonderland!
That's great that Jay served as bell-ringer. Brrrrr!
I love the snow... but only to look at, not to drive in. We've not had this much snow before Christmas in years!!!
We got a record breaking amount of snow the past few days. So much for snow tires...I can't even get out of our driveway. Jay is a marvel.
Good Luck surviving the rest of the winter! We are going through the same thing here in Idaho Falls except we have 50 mph winds to deal with too! Tell Jay to find a conference in Hawaii this Jan. and we'll meet you there!
I love the falling snow, but it does create a lot of havoc when you're trying to get around. Poor Jay. What a night!
It's been crazy here and as I've watched the news crazy everywhere. I heard AZ got a bunch of snow.
I hope you had a great anniversary. I thought of you guys.
