1. When you see me, do you think, "Look at the size of that noggin!" ? I ask because I bought a four-pack of those Scrunci hair bands, the ones that advertise "No-Slip Grip" to keep my much-too-long-and-in-need-of-a-trim bangs from dripping in my eyes and it won't stay on my head for longer than about five minutes. I put it on and immediately feel the pressure around my head. It is tight! Then, a blink, an eyebrow twitch and especially a head turn and.....slip goes the band. Yes, it's worse when my hair is sweaty, but I've tried it on dry hair and it slips then as well. It prefers to rest comfortably unstretched on the back one-third of my scalp. So, do I have a gigantic cranium or does Scrunci make an inferior product?
Do I need to cry myself to sleep on my huge pilla?
2. Seth and Sam have discovered if they practice in the morning, while I am gone, they avoid the, "Count it out!" and "B-flat!" shouts they usually hear if I'm around. I haven't decided if I'm more impressed with their early morning initiative (Jay said he was woken up at six this morning to the sounds of the second movement of Clementi's Sonatina. He wanted to complain, but...) or the fact that, all on their own, they have found the path of least resistance. I'm happy for their scientific discovery but, knowing their practice habits as I do, I am also a bit concerned. Sam has rhythm issues and Seth, well Seth learns music in a way that is completely foreign to me. He barely glances at his music and, instead, appears to learn mainly from muscle memory. So, if he learns it wrong, it's that much harder to correct. Seth figured out this early morning loophole earlier this week, but is now facing some stiff competition from Sam, who isn't nearly as interested in avoiding practicing with me as he is in one-upping his brother. Gotta love that sibling rivalry!
3. You know those Rorsharsch Ink Blot tests or the game when you find shapes in the clouds? I may be weird but I always see an animal of some sort when I look at abstract shapes. Lots of times, I don't see anything. Just blobs. But, if a form emerges, it tends to have a face and sometimes even a body. Just today, I was sitting at the dining room table thinking about something while staring at the rock fireplace and all of a sudden, within the texture of the moss and natural variations on the surface of the rock, a very fat cat appeared. It was a stretch in terms of proportion and features, but definitely a cat. In the master bathroom at our old house, there was a pattern on one of the pieces of tile (and you know how they mass produce those tiles, so that pattern was found in about every fifth piece) of a dragon. It had a snout but the tile was too small for it to have a complete body. I never see people. Only animals. And never inanimate objects like shoes or flowers. Any psychology majors out there? What does it mean?

A bear. with oddly placed tooth fangs.

A rat. Waving hello. With really long fingers.
4. I love game shows. I love adapting game shows into fun family/party/primary/young women games. In the past, I've had a lot of success but I'm learning with Young Women that they have never seen any of these game shows. I put together, what I consider, a fun derivation of the game $100,000 pyramid for mutual this week and none of the girls, not a single one, had a clue what I was talking about. They hadn't seen the show. They hadn't even heard of the show. The same thing happened a few months ago when the combined YM/YW played Family Feud. Is this Facebook's fault? Should I scrap my plans for Hollywood Squares (aka Mutual Squares), Let's Make A Deal and The Singing Bee? Isn't any game in a game show format a little more fun?
5. Jay still gets excited when he sees deer in our yard, but to me, deer are a nuisance. Maybe it's because I'm home more than he is but there are deer in our yard every day. Multiple times. There are deer in town. There are deer everywhere. Where are all the hunters? Are their numbers so few that we now have too many deer among our midst? Am I supposed to take up bow hunting and develop a taste for venison? I'm not familiar with hunting laws, but I believe there is only certain months when it is legal to hunt deer. Why is that? They do not seem to be endangered. I'm sure its my own ignorance that contributes to my opinion, but there just seem to be too many deer these days.
About fifteen feet from me without a care in the world. Notice how one of the deer's right antler is missing. That can't be comfortable.
Have a Great Weekend!

1- Those headbands don't work for me either and I would say I have a normal sized head. I bought some of the Under Armor mini headbands ($10 for a 6 pack) and they work great! I have also heard that elastic bands with a velvet type feel work wonders.
2- Your boys crack me up. I would have a review on the weekend with them to see if they are progressing?
3- I usually see food- though that cloud made me think of an elephant walking to the right with his trunk in the air.
4- I honestly don't know current game shows, but Family Fued?! How does a teen not know that show? I bet they all know Farmville.
5- This one made me laugh. You live on a mountain my dear! It seems totally normal they are all up in your bidness ;)
If it makes you feel any better, I have the opposite problem---it is rare that a headband isn't too big for me. It makes me worry that my brain is shrinking....
Perhaps they need to start making headbands in sizes? I think so!
Headbands like that don't work on me either. So who are they working on?
I am so proud of Seth and Sam, I love a crafty kid. You won't be doing the early morning work out forever, right? So the scamming won't go on forever.
When I was a kid, during a particularly harsh winter, the forest service put out food in a vacant lot behind our house. And the same time every day the deer would come down the mountain to eat and all the neighborhood children had to go inside as to not scare them. We were all trained, humans and animals. Weird huh?
Dear giant cranium twin, first of all, don't forget it's all brains in there. When I used those headbands I have to spray them with hairspray. Then they stay through my workout.
They don't stay on my head either. I even try to make my own on a whim and they still don't stay on. Awesome.
I've heard that the new trend out there is to use pre-wrap as a head band. It's the stuff you would put on your ankle before you put on athletic tape. It prevents the tape from sticking to your skin, but the pre-wrap itself is a little sticky so it kind of sticks to your hair. I've seen girls cut a length long enough to go around your head, but then they roll it so that it's thin like a head band. Try that, maybe.
Also, I played an awesome game of Hollywood squares with the senior primary. None of them knew what it was, but the teachers all did so they helped play the game right. It was a lot of fun even though the kids didn't know the game show. I'd definitely do it again.
It's not you, it's the headband.
I see checkerboard patterns...even if the objects aren't squares. I always see the four corners and one center piece. I think that may even be more weird than animals. :)
I incorporated the Price is Right into a YW lesson on managing money once. I had the same problem. No one knew what it was and they'd certainly never heard of Bob Barker. Sad.
Big head, slippery hair. At least, that's my problem. Those headbands don't work on me at all, and regular headbands slide back, too. Maybe it's because my head is like Sputnik, spherical but quite pointy in parts. (How much do I adore your movie quote??!!)
headbands--don't work for me either. I think it's the shape of the head. Never could make a headband work.
My kids have discovered the same early morning piano trick while I'm out on my run, and I am having the same concerns! I'm trying to to be so helicopter-y and to praise their initiative, but.....my boy (almost 11, think he's the same age as your boy) even tried the full-on lie last month ("I practiced already, mom!") but I caught him when I noticed the piano books were still in the car from the previous day's lesson.
Ignore the 1 lb gain. It's water. Or muscle. It will slide off with two more in a day or so. You are doing so great. I don't know how you are surviving on 1500 cals.
Breathlessly awaiting your book reviews. I was a DNF on the Lonely Polygamist. Couldn't put it down for the first 1/4, then lost interest. Chose Frankie Landau-Banks for my righteous book group to read next month, and recommended City of Thieves for my less-righteous book group last month.
Also downloaded an audible.com copy of Tiger mother to take on our ski trip this weekend. Have you read it yet?
Much love, Lori (Kelly A's sister, and your most devoted lurker)
I hope #3 is normal, because I totally identify.
