Filling in the Hours

1. I just got done swimming a mile. I don't think I've swam as a form of exercise since I was about...oh...fifteen and certifying to become a lifeguard. My side of the family is having a reunion this summer and, in January, we started a program to motivate those who desired to get in shape. Each month, besides totaling up points for minutes exercised and other good habits, there is an exercise and food challenge. My challenge for the month was to swim a mile. I cannot tell you how much I was dreading it. At the local rec center, one mile is thirty-five laps or seventy lengths. When I read that sign, I made a mental plan of how long this might take me. I figured I'd swim thirty five lengths, possibly leave the pool for nourishment (I really thought this might take a couple of hours) and hopefully finish by noon.

Well, as soon as I started, I realized that one mile wasn't going to be nearly as difficult as I initially feared. It took about an hour, and I alternated lengths doing the crawl stroke, or freestyle, and recovered on the return length doing the breast stroke. It was a good system for me and I just might work swimming in as a regular part of exercising. It was pretty fun. If I do, however, I will invest in a cap and goggles. I know it wasn't pretty when I was flailing my head around trying to get my long bangs out of my face and mouth to breathe. Hey, the lifeguards have to have someone to giggle at, right?

2. You know those paper vests they give you at the doctor's office when they need to do a breast exam? You kind of look like Aladdin for awhile but I've never had any confusion about if the opening goes in the front or in the back. Yesterday, I had such an appointment and instead of the paper vest, I got a regular old hospital gown. I was so confused because I knew the purpose, but if I wore it with the opening in the front (which I tried at first) it felt all wrong. I took a gamble and switched the gown around so the opening was in the back and my doctor didn't say anything, but did have to take my arms out of the sleeves each time she performed her examination. I asked the resident expert, Jay, later in the evening what the proper protocol was when given a gown. He reassured me that the opening belonged in the back. Phew. Just passing it onto you anyone else who may find themselves in a similar quandary.

3. Surprisingly enough, only a few hours later, I was asked to disrobe again. This time, for a brow wax and facial. I had no earthly idea why being unclothed was necessary, but as this was my first facial (I had a coupon and my brows needed help ASAP) I obeyed and took off my top.

Have you ever been in one of those back spa rooms with the table in the middle of the room? I hadn't. My spa experiences have been limited to pedicures and the only massage I've ever had took place in what was essentially a doctor's office. Bright fluorescent lights, vinyl covered table, therapist who thought giving a massage meant releasing all toxins from every nook and cranny and the more you cried, the better.

Just as the gown perplexed me earlier that morning, the table really threw me for a loop. You see, it wasn't flat. One end was sort of raised into an inverted "V". So, either I was supposed to be on my stomach and hug the V with my arms, or, I was supposed to lie on my back and place the back of my knees on the apex of the V. Considering that they would probably need to see my face for a facial and brow wax, I choose to lie on my back. They had some blankets for coverage but I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone, essentially lying upside down like you would on the sit up bench at the gym. At least it was warm.

When the spa person entered the room, I immediately asked, "Is this right?" She assured me I was in the right position and from that moment on, I felt determined to allow the soothing music to relax me. Other than the actual waxing and plucking and squeezing the junk from my pores after she had opened them, it was very relaxing. She did massage the sides of my neck and tops of my shoulders, which, I suppose she couldn't have done had I been wearing a turtle neck, but the whole taking off my clothes really did seem unnecessary. Still, I loved the facial and I hope to do it again.

4. Off to a RS presidency meeting in an hour. Tomorrow, I'm going skiing. Thursday, I'm taking a group of women to the temple. Just some of what I'm able to do now that Henry is in pre-school. If he wasn't in little Henry Heaven going to school Monday - Thursday, I'd feel more guilt. But, he loves it so who am I to complain?:)  Besides, there are plenty of days and weeks when the hours are filled with much, much more of the mundane.

Check out that smooth skin with all kinds of essential oils rubbed into it and my newly shaped brows.  The hair is a bit frizzy from all the wet towels she kept wrapping around my face.  The chlorine from my hour in the swimming pool this morning has given it quite a different feel from yesterday.

Way to go on the swim! I had those same sentiments when I did my mile. I thought, "I should make this more of my w/o routine"...it really was sort of fun. But I do agree that you need a cap. That was the most annoying thing...my hair getting tangled in m goggles.

You crack me up with the disrobing dilemas. Seeing as I'm going next week, thanks for the reminder of how the robe goes:)

I love facials..that's one of the things I usually do at Salish every January. You look great!

Have a great week :)

the first time i went for my breast exam, i put the paper robe on backwards! Things like that all-ways happen to me. :)
Your face looks great.

I would have worried about the table and the gown, too! I hate it when I get in situations where I feel like I should know what to do, but I don't. Frusterating!!

I don't know how you did the mile swim. I still doggie paddle, and I would probably die if I had to swim with my face in the water. Just has never been my thing. I'm impressed you are doing it!

I must be a very poor swimmer because the mile was really hard for me. My whole body feels weak today. I'm amazed to hear both you and Jen describe it as something you'd like to do regularly.

Just hearing the word disrobe makes me uncomfortable. I've had all sorts of options from the paper vest, to a robe they want to open in the front, to a robe they want to open in the back and a paper sheet for the bottom half. Thankfully they've always told me how to put the cover-ups on. What an awkward situation.

I've had a facial but never on a table such as you described. I hate it when I don't know what to do in a new situation like that. Once I was getting a massage and the therapist told me to take everything but my panties off. Now THAT was awkward! What was I to do when I don't wear panties such as she was imagining? (I know you hate the word panties...did I make you squirm? I have to admit, I kinda like it. :))

Wow on the swim! Congratulations!

I had my womanly physical yesterday, they have real gowns, the nurse told me "open to the front" when she handed it to me. That's cool when I'm standing, but as soon as I sat down the two mini ties did nothing to stop the gown gaping and exposing of my problem mid area. I opened and closed drawers until I found a sheet to cover the rest of me.

Swimming has defeated me my entire life...like the pull-up! Great job Lucy!!!

Oh Lucy! I'm in complete and utter awe at the fact that you can swim. I had a class when I was at college and got a good grade, but now, the skill just eludes me! I took Megan with me one day (my resident lifeguard) and had her try to teach me how to swim again. She told me I was ridiculous, and to stay on dry land.

I concur and will be staying on dry land.

Disrobe, disrobe, disrobe! That's paybacks for the P-word, Tara:) Why can't everyone just say "underwear?"

Kelly - that was exactly the problem with wearing the hospital gown with the opening in front. Since I would spend most of my time sitting on the exam table, the gaping just would not do. It wasn't decent:)

Thanks for all the swimming accolades. It was hard, but enjoyable at the same time too because of the rhythm to it. I loved hearing my exhale underwater each time I put my face back in the water. My problem was taking my face out of the water. Eventually, I figured out the only way to not have a bunch of water enter my mouth was to look behind me at my shoulder when I took a breath.

Susan, I am married to a non-swimmer, so I know all about those who are better off on dry land.

Wow! A mile! That's totally awesome. I couldn't do it. Good for you.

I had a facial once and I had to disrobe too. Must be part of that sort of thing!

I would have drown, no doubt about it. Hopefully the lifeguards would have done more that giggle . . .

I love the photo at the end of this post. You DO look refreshed!

I swam laps during each of my pregnancies and love that form of exercise. The amazing thing is that I'm not all that comfortable in the water. Like another commenter, I cannot for the life of me put my face down in the water, so that leaves me doing the front stroke, back stroke and side stroke (I can't even take it when another swimmer splashes water onto my face).

Sadly, swimming with my last pregnancy is what led to the foot issues I am dealing with now.

I have been wanting to start swimming again for awhile now. I might have to wait till my little guy goes to preschool because going at night never seems to work out.

I had a facial this morning and it was lovely! My skin feels so smooth and refreshed. Wish I could get one a week. :)

Wait, you swam a mile without goggles? Were your eyes stinging? I hate it when I want to go swimming and I don't have goggles and I get in the pool and feel so naked. I'm impressed you went that long without them. It makes me want to get back in the pool. And speaking of naked, now I know how to dress at my next dr.'s appointment. Guaranteed I'm going to think of you and say to myself "Lucy said it goes in the back."
