Overheard

It's Christmas break.  The rules are relaxed.

But, my boys don't know that.

Both Seth and Sam received Nintendo DS Lites from Mom and Dad for Christmas.  They were originally Santa gifts, but after Sam overheard me telling my sister to be sure and remind me to pay her for the DS she purchased for me, one cat was out of the bag.  I fibbed (an entire post was missed due to my irregular posting habit about the art of lying at Christmas) and explained that, yes, Seth was going to get a DS.  Could he please keep it a secret?  He was sad that he wasn't getting one, but reassured that if I thought he was old enough after watching Seth play with his, perhaps he could get one for his birthday in January (does keeping the element of Christmas surprise negate the sin of lying?)

Needless to say, Sam was delighted, and for one short millisecond, confused, when he opened his own DS.  I hugged him and told him, "Merry Christmas" and hoped he didn't connect the dishonesty dots too quickly.

Now, I purposely chose the DS lite because I did NOT want my nine and six year old to have internet access, nor did I want to pay more for a service I would only disable.  What I didn't realize, however, is that when DS lites are close enough to each other, a "chat" connection is possible.  The boys quickly discovered this and I watched amusedly as they sat side by side on the couch, "chatting."    I have no problem with it as long as they don't develop the obnoxious habit of text language.  I am seriously worried about the future of the English language after reading teenage text messages.

Tonight, I had my own moment of discovery while eavesdropping.   Seth, apparently unaware of how well sound carries from the basement to the living room, explained to Sam how, "if you put one headphone in, you can easily hear Mom or Dad coming down the hallway."  The plan is for the DSes to break out after lights out and to continue their conversation via DS chat.

My kids know me well enough to know that I don't have the personality to be o.k. with electronics in bed after lights out.  Secret under the covers book reading? I'd turn a blind eye.   Lego light saber fighting?  Um...no.  Unless it's Christmas break.

What adds to my amusement is the fact that Seth has been in his own room for less than two weeks.  With only a shared wall in between our bedrooms, I have spent the better part of the last four years listening to the two of them chat after goodnights have been said.  I have also listened to one or the other, but usually Sam, come out and complain about the other one keeping them away with an unrequited desire to chat.

I can't hear any noise coming from either bedroom.

I sit here, with a smile on my face.

Wondering if I should walk down the hall.

The answer is quite simple. You just need to get yourself a DS lite and after they have been chatting for a few minutes, you break in with a post of your own..."Boys, it's time for bed."

Problem solved!

We've had this exact same problem. We now have a "check your DS in the den downstairs before heading off to bed" rule. But now they're just back to their chatting so I'm not sure what's worse.

Youngsters and their technology these days! When I was a kid and we lived where sacrament meeting was in a different language so we wore headphones while someone translated for us, my little brother would plug his walk man into his sacrament meeting head phones and really enjoy the meeting. The adults were none the wiser. Cracked me up then, and I probably shouldn't admit it but it cracks me up now when I catch the sneaky ingenuity and I have to reward it by faking like I didn't hear. But breaking into the conversation with your own DS lite post would be hilarious!

We check ours in at bedtime too, on school days. Holidays it's one big free-for-all!

I love this story! My boys walk around most of the time with one earphone out as they listen to their i-pods because they know if I call for them and they don't hear they're in BIG trouble!!

I like C.J.'s advice.

Hear. Hear. Texting will be the demise of the English language as we know it.

I love looking at your books getting marked off one by one.

I agree with Clark-it's such a techie solution! Brilliant! What is it about the break multiplied by the adorableness of kids being creative? It makes it so they can get away with anything! :) Oh well, there's a whole new year coming for us to bust our kids--I guess you have to let them have a little fun.

I think I love your boys, and I'm officially reserving them for my daughters.

BTW, thank you for the Christmas card! It made me feel sad and guilty that I didn't send any this year. But then I got over it. ;-)

After we got Luci her DS Lite for Christmas last year, she discovered that we live close enough to our neighbors to "chat" with them. I did not like that at all, but luckily the newness of it all wore off quickly and they have not "chatted" for months. Luci does have her own e-mail account but I am okay with that since I have the password and check her account a few times a week to see who she has been emailing-- usually it's our priest and her teacher, good Luci! (She is 8.)

I like CJ's suggestion but maybe you could borrow one for the night rather than buy their own. Carmen and Chloe got the DS (not the light - the heavy?) and they have been enjoying them especially since Kellys' girls already had them.
I read your Christmas letter to Kelly today, which is going to make my own mail when I get home be less fun, but anyway I really enjoyed it.

I laugh when I hear my boys say- "hey- go downstairs and meet me in picto-chat!" Brendan's highlight of his middle-school band/choir concert was chatting with 20 kids! I was all- "weren't you all in the same room anyway??" Geek! haha :)

Abby got a DS lite for her bday in August. She got it taken away a few days later when I happened to go upstairs and saw her playing it over an hour after she was tucked in. But mostly I love that she has fun with it and that being the second child she got something BEFORE Emily did!
