Our Hoover Windtunnel vacuum cleaner stopped working. Nothing exploded or anything, but I noticed it wasn't "lifting" the carpet up anymore. The only lines that were being made were from the hard plastic tires and as carpet is the predominant floor covering in this temporary residence of mine (will I ever be free from carpet? WHY do people put it in eating areas?????) it was getting pretty nasty.
Alas, it was time for a new vacuum. I'm sorry, but buying a vacuum is not a sexy way to spend money, especially when it stems from desperation. I even like to vacuum, as far as mindless chores around the house go, but was recently appalled when I went to Sam's Club and realized they only had two models priced under $200 (where was the $50 option??) and four priced in the $400's. Seriously? Are certain vacuums now status symbols? I mean, do these companies realize the only people that see us vacuuming are more likely to be more impressed if they can sword fight with the attachment tools than by what color it is? Why would I want a pink vacuum?
I left determined to find one cheaper online or at a different store and ended up at Target. To be fair, they did have $50 options that were so slight and wimpy looking, I doubted it could manage to suck up the mayhem that can be created by Henry. I needed something that, at a minimum, had the power to suck up an entire bag of rice.
Like most of my purchases, I gravitated towards the middle of the line products. I somehow feel better knowing that I didn't get fleeced by buying the most expensive model, but neither am I the schlep who is reduced to sweeping my carpet, hoping a bristle might get lucky enough to move that dried piece of roast from last night to another spot on the floor.
No, I purchased another Hoover....but this time there was no "bag" option. Like all its brothers and sisters, it wants to show me its dirt.
Gross. I don't want this knowledge. I must be like an aristocrat, because I like it better when the family dirt is contained. If you think about it, this vision into our dirty habits is almost an invasion of privacy. Anyone that comes over could voyeur into my see-through vacuum cannister and figure out what we had for dinner the night before, or know that I'm too lazy to pick up paper clips and pennies. I'm not saying they would, I'm just saying they could. If they were curious and desperate enough.
All too much information, in my opinion. Death to this open lifestyle! Back in the closet where you belong!

It definitely looks cool! and it looks like you had a lot of stuff on your carpet...it's a 1/4 full:)I think I see some gorilla munch balls. Happy vacumming.
I am glad to see I am not alone here in my preferences! The very first vacuum cleaners didn't have bags. Bags were an INOVATION! They were a step up! So now we return to our bagless roots of the dark ages? The thought of having to dump out something with an explosion of dust and the dust mites and other uglies from my carpet somehow doesn't appeal to me! We have a bagged vacuum and I dread the day we have to replace it with a non bagged kind. I mourn with you over the loss of your vacuum bags. RIP.
My vacuum has been behaving much the same way, only I'm hoping it keeps up as I am so ready for it to die!!! I hated my hoover bagless (it was a savvy)... it was always clogged. I hope you have more success!
I have a 'status symbol' vacuum. (Embarrassed smiley here). But I LOVE my Dyson- even if I can see our filth. I like it though, makes me feel like I'm being productive, kind of like when you wax your eyebrows and there is obvious evidence that you needed waxing? Like that.
OT and shameless blog plug- I'm running a contest, entering is easy, winning is fun! (Not sure why that last part was so cheesy- it just came out).
I agree that it's gross to see the dusty grime but I actually enjoy it in some weird way. Makes me feel like I've got something to show for my work. And no blindly feeling the bag and wondering if it should be emptied.
But in the end, I agree that it should stay in the closet with the door securely closed because, after all, I think I'm much more embarrassed at the condition of my closet than the contents of the canister!
Ok I am so with you on this. I had a hoover with no bag and it sicked me out every time I had to use it. Seriously who wants to know...not me. I was happier in the dark.
There you go again with another great post about an ordinary thing! I love your ability to take issue with a vacuum cleaner.
Jane said it perfectly.
I have strong vacuum opinions. No surprise right? And I also take issue with the revealing canister. I also bought the almost $400 vacuum 15 years ago and still love it.
Sorry your money had to go to something so unsexy. (Maybe you should have gone with the pink! :)...)
I know, Right!
And not only do you have to look at your crud. Then you also have to wash that canister out every once in a while. Another chore!
I love to vacuum but don't have much carpet, I did have a hard time finding a cheap but good vacuum, all the cheap ones were just that and some of the medium ones were so loud and still didn't suck very well, like you I am in the middle range (although I would love a Dyson, my MIL has one and it is awesome).
I do like the bagless though, for me it is so exciting/satisfying to see all the dirt I was able to get.
Such a cute little red vacuum. I agree, definitely not my first choice of where to spent money. Oh well, the story of our lives right!
Hee hee...you're so cute!
I have a bagless and while I love being able to dump the cup, it gives me the shivers sometime. Eww!
I am frequently disturbed by the amount of dirt I collect after vacuuming just a day or so before. Definitely TMI. I usually dump and look the other way. And then blame all the dirt and dust on my kids, ha!
We have Central Vac, which means everything gets sucked through the walls and deposited in a big canister in the garage, where we can empty our shameful dirt in private. Only the garage is cold, and it's scary back there in the corner where the mice go to die. I make my husband empty it. Ptooey!
That vacuum just creates one more step for the vacuuming chore. I would have to empty that cannister more frequently than I change bags in the vaccuum I own.
I actually have that very same vacuum, but like you can't STAND the sight of the nastiness that gets sucked up. Even after dumping it there is still dust all over causing big clouds of YUCK. I vowed when I got another I would be back with the bags. I hope it does you right. It does have the cool retraction plug thingy that I enjoy. But beware it tends to get whippy. I got tagged in the leg with it the other day. Ouch!
Duct tape over the "want to see my trash?" canister should do the trick! Ahhh, the wonderful uses of Duct tape.
I wish I could get a bag less that wasn't a clear canister. It is interesting to me to see all the crud collected and thrown away- but I don't want the world to see it. I get this sort of twisted satisfaction from seeing the "fruits" of my labor getting dumped into the trash. Esp. after doing my car.
And I am totally with you on the carpet under eating areas- what are they thinking?!?!?
I never imagined a vacuuming post wouldn't suck, but this one doesn't. I loved it!
My m-i-l bought out latest vacuum. I don't think I could have physically done it because I really, really hate vacuuming.
Is there something wrong with me?...I find great joy in the fact that I see all the dirt that's been sucked up from my floors!
My vacuum broke yesterday. It was a Hoover we got for our wedding and have been using it the whole almost-12 years. I am in the same pickle--don't want to pay $400 for a cleaning aparatus. Let me know how you like your new Hoover.
