Yesterday was the season opener for the BYU Cougar football team. When we knew we were going to be close for a year, we splurged and bought four season tickets for our family. I'm a girl who likes football, my boys like football and Jay tolerates it so that he can spend time with the rest of us (it's hard to emote sarcasm in the written word so here's a little winky guy so that my meaning is conveyed;-)).
Unfortunately for him, his call debut and his holiday shift fell on this weekend. He had to switch some stuff around, which is painful for a guy who doesn't like to rock the boat, but managed to make it to the game by halftime. This is what he missed:
The game didn't start until 3:30 pm, so I had some stalling to do so that everyone had enough energy and happy thoughts to enjoy the game. I had originally thought about going to campus before the game to hit the WILK and buy some t-shirts but by the time I would have needed to leave my house to get down there to shop AND make it to the game on time, I knew I didn't want or need to punish myself that much. I told the boys that we'd get t-shirts another time, definitely before the next game, but that didn't make them feel better as we walked to the stadium alongside the masses wearing their Cougar Blue. I believe the new theme for the year, or at least what some marketing genius decided would produce the most guilt for parents who didn't buy their kids t-shirts, is "Fully Invested".
Kelly, who has a mother's heart and is in the running for best sister-in-law ever, called me about an hour before I was planning on leaving, with an offer to watch Henry during the game. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew he'd be hard to bring, but I mostly figured it would be like having him at church, except he could freely make noise and lots of it.
But I took her up on her offer after she reminded me that it was possible Jay would never make it to the game and once there, I was so glad I didn't have him. When we parked, my van thermostat read 97 degrees! We had to walk almost a mile to the stadium and there were so many people everywhere. I had a hand on each of my boys and it was still stressful. Our hands were sweaty and we could hear the speakers in the stadium announcing the players and Seth wanted to be there already but Sammy couldn't go any faster. At the stadium, we hiked up to our seats that are five rows from the top. Thankfully, luckily, happily...our tickets are on the west side and we had shade. I was dripping sweat by the time we sat down. I could feel it trickling down my back and the hair on my neck was wet. It would have been so hard with Henry there. Even without him, I was wondering if I should walk back and sell my tickets to the Japanese men who were holding a sign outside the stadium that said, "Will pay handsomely for tickets." Very tempting.
There is a rule against bringing ANYTHING inside the stadium. Purses are allowed but they are checked and they can't be big. No water, no food. We were really trying to get to our seats for the opening kick-off so didn't stop off at a concession stand before making our hike. About 2 minutes into the game and Sammy started telling me how thirsty he was. His cheeks were red and I was actually thirsty too but we had just sat down and the stairs were still crowded with people getting to their seats. I told him to wait.
I made it to the second quarter, but could hold Sammy off no longer. The game held no interest for a boy about to die. Once again thankful I didn't have to lug Henry on my hip, we descended to the concession stand and spent $10 on drinks. Two water bottles and a soda. They really meant FULLY invested.
I love the mountains here! I've always thought this has to be one of the most picturesque stadiums in the country.

Rise and Shout! We watched the game as a family on our DVR (we had the corn feed and I forced Jason to go). Jason bought the fully invested t-shirts for all of us. Hopefully the team felt our vibe. I was surprised how many people in our ward ordered them too. I think Jason talked them all into it. I've read up on the shirts and they are the grass roots campaign of a fan who wants the stadium in blue like other teams, for example Texas. He had to raise more than $100,000 so they can sell them for $5.00.
Jason also bought season tickets last week so we may be down for a couple of games. We gave the tickets for yesterday's game to the Hubers. We are for sure going to the Utah game.
I'm glad Jay could make it to the game and I am so jealous you are there in person.
Glad you had a fun time!
I glad you spent fun time with your family.
Go Cougs! I thought you guys got suited up with BYU blue when Jen was there? Poor Sammy, he's just mad he's wearing Texas Longhorn orange.
We went to our first game of the season on Saturday too. Except Rice lost (what else is new). And the game was delayed because of lightning in the middle of the first quarter and we went home before the game started again.
But before the rain I looked at the city skyline all around the stadium and told Mike I thought it was the most picturesque stadium in the country!
GO BYU? It was a great game. IN our home we are BIG BYU fans. That is so cool that you were at the game, and got to see TY Detmer's and Gifford Nielsen's retired their jerseys. Ryan and Christopher are going to a game in SOON ! Boys weekend away. Have a fun MOnday :)
Bronco Mendenhall, the head coach, supplied the phrase "Fully Invested", using it to describe many of his players over his 3 year tenure as coach. It has kind of become his recognizable pet phrase. We loved the game, even if it was almost 1000000 degrees! Go Cougs!
Kelly, I suited the boys up with sweatshirts because....football is a fall sport. So...I need to get my hands on some of those $5 fully invested t-shirts!
I love football too! yea for football season! And you took great pictures! I like the one with the players and one is running with the ball, good picture!
I think that the hats count as attire! Maybe you could check Wal-mart (I know you hate that store) but the shirts are probably the same for half the cost.
How nice of Kelly to take Henry. And even better Jay made part of the game. I thought about you guys yesterday during it :)
Oh, you go girl! I am so not a football fan, though I'd attended a few BYU games as a kid. dh is a big football fan, a closet BYU fan (so don't tell anybody) and we rarely miss one of their games on TV.
You're killing me! I SO wish I could've been there and several times during the game turned to Jon to say, "You've just GOT to take me to a game this year!"
Oh how I love Cougar Football!!!
Looks like they're going to be good.
Glad you had a good time. I made sure our kids were outfitted in their BYU blue for the day. I, however went to the supermall and managed to shop while everyone else watched the game. I think it would be fun to see them again at the stadium. Looks like a great time!
You are such a good mom- the walk there, the heat, doing it all without The Dad. Ugh. Not being a FAN I just don't get it, but I am glad you do and it is something cool you all get to share. You look super cute in that last pic!
The heat about did me in at the game too. We are on the southwest side of the stadium too. Blessed shade. Maybe we could meet up sometime. Go Cougs.
I think we should trade husbands so you can have a football freak and I can have someone who doesn't need to tolerate it.
wow- again, no idea that BYU stadium view was so beautiful! so cool.
