As a stocking stuffer, both Seth and Sam got a Rubik's Cube for Christmas. Not exactly a hit as neither has played with their cube much - just enough to ensure that only the brightest mind be able to restore six solid sides of color.
Occasionally, Henry will choose to play with one of his brother's Rubik's Cube and pull it from the depths of the bottom of the toy box and twist and turn the thing to his heart's content. He did this exact thing the other day and managed to sneak the toy into the van on one of our outings (Toys are not usually allowed in the car. Books, yes, although I'm starting to rethink that one. I know. I'm a meanie).
It must have rolled into the backseat, because on our drive home from church yesterday, Sammy quietly played with his long-lost toy. As we parked the van in the garage and began giving reminders to bring in books, jackets and bags, Sammy showed off his Rubik's Cube success: a full side of bright, happy yellow.
"Look, Dad. I got the yellows all together."
"Wow, Sammy! Did you do that all by yourself? I'm impressed!" Jay inquired, truly gushing.
"He cheated." Seth deadpanned, taking all the puff out of Sammy's pride.
Upon closer inspection, the evidence was clear. Two crooked stickers.
As one who has never in her life been able to line up a Rubik's Cube without moving the stickers, I was actually impressed that his six year-old mind thought to do it. Tears and self-flagellation are much more my kids style.
Welcome, Sam. You are among friends.

Rearranging stickers was too much for me I just popped the cubes apart and reassembled.
I never really tried to get the cube. It always seemed like such a waste of time for me and like an impossible feat. I never even got to the point of thinking to move stickers!
You are so Angela...
Ha! Your Angela comment cracked me up!
I never thought of removing stickers, but like Amie, I did pop it apart and put it back together. My brain just does not work like that.
Hey Lucy,
Wow, haven't been on the computer for ever! All your book reviews are making me salivate to get reading!
Loved your Sunday Thoughts!
My kids also got rubik cubes for Christmas - they aren't even interested enough to do the sticker thing. way to go Sam!
I belong to that club of "sticker-rearrangers"...Welcome Sammy!! ;)
So funny and I love Angela!
I have done the same thing when i was 8 years old. IT took me all day to remove all the stickers and put it back on the cube:)
So funny! Nathan got one for Christmas and I want to pick the stickers off and rearrange like I did when I was young but that has never occurred to Nate so I resist. Instead I've watched countless videos on YouTube and STILL haven't helped him solve it. They make is sound so easy and it makes me crazy. I'd be among friends though, so maybe I shouldn't care.
I know two people who can ALWAYS put the rubix cube back the correct way without taking off the stickers or popping out the individual cubes... It's a bit creepy to watch - one of them tried to teach me once, but it was too confusing...
Santa gave one to my oldest... I think it is still in the plastic!
Ha. That's awesome. I am a recovered sticker rearranger. Recovered only because I haven't played with a rubiks cube in years!
I love puzzles and am pretty good at them, if I do say so myself, but the cube is definitely beyond me.
Love the Angela reference...:)
No toys in the car? For some reason that surprises me. I am cracking up at the sticker cheating AND the cat video. That Angela video of her cat cam is hilarious...did you see that one?
