I really didn't want to offer baby-sitting as my service for our relief society's service auction held last night.
Obviously, I can do it, but it didn't feel very imaginative, or fun, and...well...I don't actually like baby-sitting.
I didn't want to offer to cook for someone either.
Cleaning their bathroom. Nope.
Running errands. No way.
These were the acts of service that ran through my head when the sign-up sheet came around during church for the Enrichment activity held last night, and none of them felt like gold. Especially when I read some of the other offerings from women in my ward.
A haircut.
FHE kits for a month.
A lesson on making jewelry.
These were only some of the really creative and interesting things to be auctioned off on Wednesday night, so putting down babysitting didn't seem...enough.
So, I stretched. Really stretched. Like pulled-the-taffy-into-a-piece-so-long-that-it-could-only-droop-in-the-middle stretched.
My offering: Helping someone learn any piece of music.
It felt dorky, but I worked it out in my mind to be a good thing. After all, when thinking back on the things I've felt the most helpful with at church, musical things came to mind: the music for the road show, teaching parts for the Stake musical, accompanying various musical numbers, preparing the program for a missionary fireside, playing the organ at a funeral etc., etc., etc.
I reasoned that many people like to sing, or have nice voices, but don't have the confidence or musical training to tackle an unknown piece of music on their own. I can help with that. I can be of service.
However, as soon as the auction started, I felt anxious. I didn't feel a Rudy-esque happy ending coming on. No one really knows me here. I'm just a new girl that has been gone half the time I've been a member of the ward. I felt in my bones that my service wouldn't be a popular item.
Through out the evening, everyone in attendance (except perhaps me) was having a good time. A light dinner of chicken salad with croissants had been prepared and by the time the auction started, sisters were raising paddles and calling out, "200!" "250!" for a massage....a basket of laundry ironed...a dinner date.
Then the auctioneer unpinned my piece of paper from the bulletin board.
"Lucy is offering help to anyone interested in learning a musical number!"
Silence.
"What is it?" someone called from the back.
"Um, Lucy, can you clarify what you're willing to do?" the auctioneer requested.
"Oh...you know. I'll teach somebody the music to anything they're interested in learning. A musical number for church, christmas music, Musical theater. Whatever." I replied with a red face.
"O.K. Let's start the bidding. Learn a musical number for 75 points! 75! Do I have a 75! 75 ladies! C'mon! I need a 75!"
The paddles stayed on the table.
I almost called out, "It's o.k. You can just move on to the next one." but after the umpteenth desperate sounding. "75!" a kind looking woman raised her paddle and the auctioneer quickly called out, "Sold for 75 points!"
And that was that.
I should have offered up baby-sitting. Those offerings were flying off the wall like hotcakes.
Sigh.

Oh, Lucy. You write the best stories about ward parties. Remember your pizza game night? It wasn't lost on me.
This activity post had all the feeling in it. All of it. I feel for you. I wanted to hide under the chair for you. But be assured....I WOULD HAVE BID 1000 FOR IT. I've had borrowed, cajoled and stolen points from someone else if you could teach me how to sing.
(By the way, do you know I really, really wanted to ask you to sing a solo when you were here, but was afraid it wasn't very neighborly.)
I just love your "the good, the bad and the ugly posts." I'm just never sure what the punch line will be and how it will end. Love them.
Aww.
See but this is what I love about you. You put it out there. I would have offered up babysitting because I just never put it out there. :P
At least you don't have to babysit!
I'm sorry. I could just feel your pain of the awkward situation.
I don't blame you for not wanting to offer babysitting, I wouldn't be excited about that either.
I think your idea was really creative. Good for you for doing something different.
Aw, that makes me feel really bad for you, but also really, really glad that you don't have to babysit!!
Lucy, you were brave enough to put something out there at all. That deserves all the commendation that I can give you! (And it's more than I did when our Relief Society did a service auction. I didn't do *anything*. Yikes.) So cut yourself some slack! I think it sounds great!
It was funny listening to you tell in on the phone last night, but it's even more laughable in story form! Chances are you probably won't have to do anything...and like the others said, at least you won't have to babysit!
At least now you know who the nicest person in the ward is. ;)
Brownies are always a good thing to auction.
Can you teach me the how to perform "La Macarena?" I've got 80 points right here....
Dang it! I was waiting for the surprise ending where everyone was clamoring for the music lessons and your service got the highest bid of the night. Yeah, I probably watch too many movies. But the ending was just painful. I'm so sorry. I totally get it. On a positive note, maybe this kind lady will redeem her prize and you two will hit if off. New friend!
I would have paid you tons just for you to teach me Chopsticks on the piano! I would LOVE to learn how to play someday.
p.s. I am glad I am not the only one how dislikes babysitting!
The evil side of me is thinking that is a great one for the auction because you may never have to give your time - it may never be collected on. Woo-hoo! More time to read!
Jane - you're hilarious. I can just imagine the campfire serenade;)
Amber - nice perspective. I hadn't thought of it that way. I think you may be right.
Jon - You know my macarena is worth more than 80! Didn't you SEE my moves?
Denise - the hollywood version would have been nice. Me...lifted up onto everyones' shoulders while we all sang "We Are Family!" I know.
Lisa...for 75 points, I can teach you chopsticks!:)
Barb, the EXACT same thought has come to my mind. This may be a blessing in disguise. I have my doubts as to whether this music lesson will ever happen.
And to everyone - at least I don't have to babysit!!!!!! Woot!
I think what you did was thoughtful and creative. I have been the giver of a "lame" service at one of those auctions - I offered to put a christmas card list into a merge form for their envelopes. Like Barb said, I never had to pay up.
I would like you to teach me music. I think it was great what you did. And I would totally have shyed away from the babysitting. I can do it for people I know who have good kids, but there are people in the ward I would pay to NOT have me watch their kids. Enough said.
BTW - I missed your blog a lot while you were gone. Glad you had fun, equally glad you are home & we get to read your great stories again.
I really want to print this post off and show it to my Presidency. They are all excited about our own RS "auction" that is coming up and I am against it. Not only can you auction off a service but you can auction off "something". So the really crafty people will get bids like crazy and the less creative people won't get any bids.
THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE THAT ANYTHING LIKE THAT WOULD EVER HAPPEN!!
Hello! It ALWAYS does. And someone feels embarrassed.
BTW- your service would have sold like crazy in our ward.
The thing I am auctioning off...very lame. I'm sure I'll be the one without any takers. I hope there's some nice lady out there for me too.
I hate babysitting as well and would NEVER auction it as a service!!
And...Christmas List Merger blogger ...I think that is a FABULOUS service to offer!! :)
I am not a very good babysitter either. We had this exact thing happen a few years ago in my old ward. You know what is sad?? I had the very same experience as you. No one wanted my service. Guess what it was?? Drum roll........organizing a closet. How lame is that??
I know that the girl that bought it never would have called me so I took it upon myself and called her. It was probably the lamest act of service I did, but I think she truly appreciated it.
Singing in TONS better than cleaning!
I would never offer up babysitting. I could see it now, the family with the most kids (all rotten) will come over for 'just an hour' and the next thing you know your trying to entertain them while your kids go to bed. Yeah, it happens!
I'm with Barb, possibly no service at all and more time to read (or blog).
Thanks for the laughs, sorry they were at your expense from that awkward night. Love your writing!
We did this a few years ago and they kept hounding me to come up with a service for it, and I finally told them my service would be not to come and bid against someone else! It's because of things just like this post that I won't participate! And now that I'm on the committee, if they want to have something like this, I will still not partipate and do my darndest to talk them out of it.
A big WOOT for no babysitting, though!
Ok, holy cow, I can't stop laughing, I actually have a tear rolling down my cheek. I'm sure it didn't seem too funny last night at the activity, but the way you tell the story is downright hilarious. I'm sorry that happened to you. I definitely would have bid if I was there.
You're so cute. I am glad your blog isn't private now so I can see it. Oh and your marathon? Alone? With 3 kids? You are brave but looks like it was fun.
I once offered "Help listing any item on eBay." I got about the same result. The winning pity-bidder never even called me. Welcome to the auction crasher club.
These church shenanigans of yours are some of my favorite posts. I almost skipped ahead to see what the response was! I am sorry you got the pity bid but did think about that lady being the 'nicest'.
I don't mind babysitting for friends kids, but the random ones where I don't know and love the parents, not gunna happen. I would have bid for yours, hands down.
Here you are, keepin' it real. You offered what you are really passionate about. The person who received it, if they seize their opportunity, will feel blessed. If not, I agree, more time to read. Amen on not having to babysit random kids!
Can I just say again, I love your blog!
