I feel sad today.
We didn't have a very successful weekend. Before I left, I told Amy M., "I'm not coming home without an address!"
I came home without an address.
We've made a decision (probably, perhaps, maybe, we'll see) and both Jay and I are trying out the feeling to see if it's a good one, or if the stomach ache we've had for the last two days will persist.
Here's the situation:
Almost every home we looked at, that could even be considered a possibility (and there were some we walked through that don't fit that criteria) is located within a different elementary school's boundary. There are only seven elementary schools. We don't really want to move our kids to another school in a year. So, even though we are fully, and thankfully aware, that none of these home choices is permanent, we are hoping the school Seth and Sam start this fall will be.
The second gut wrenching dilemma is the ward situation. There are two wards in D-town. Jay grew up in the second ward. His brother's family is in Second Ward. His parents are in Second Ward. The house we are choosing (probably, possibly, maybe, we'll see) is in First Ward.
In theory, this is not even a tiny problem. Bloom where you are planted, I always say, and would never, ever think of living somewhere solely on ward boundaries. But, Jay didn't like the ward. I simply felt ambivalent upon leaving. They really weren't that friendly. Not mean. Several people came up and introduced themselves. But, Second Ward is falling all over themselves trying to get us to live within their boundaries and part of me, part of us, want to be where we are already loved. Except that the three houses that we could rent are not possibilities. They just aren't. Believe me.
In addition, there are only four Young Men in the ward. Total. Two deacons, one teacher and one priest. Not exactly a selling point.
The last thing, that apparently I just need to get over, is that the idea of a "yard" does not exist in any traditional sense. The main problem I have with the house we are choosing (probably, possibly, maybe, we'll see), is that there is no back door to the back.....er.....area. Our kids would have to go out the front door, down the stone steps, up the stone rocks to get to the non-fenced, non-grass, non-flat "backyard".
From the ad. Either side of the house is filled with rocks and the backyard, while fun with pine trees and rocks and dirt and nature, is unaccessible and hard to have Henry play in without me right by his side. Which isn't, at all, the point of a back yard.I hate it. We've spent the last year without a real yard and it was something I was looking forward to. But, as un-ideal as my description sounds, it's still the best choice. It's better than the non-yard onto the golf course (although that home was beautiful...but the owners are family members of someone in the radiology department who haven't been able to sell it since October but want to re-list it next summer. Which means we'd have all sorts of pressure to keep the house in its current pristine condition. Which means, of course, that we'd have to sell Henry).
Taken from the golf course. Pretty, but don't people feel uncomfortable with a bunch of strangers in their back yard all day? I certainly wouldn't want any of my children out there alone. It's better than the A-frame house whose back yard has a creek running through it (swiftly moving and no fence either).
The living room. The creek runs behind the deck. Beautiful. But very remote. We'd be alone most of the time. It's even better than the trashed house by the college that has a patio but then a mountain behind it (nice for privacy...but not for play!)
Did I mention that the house we are choosing (probably, possibly, maybe, we'll see) is also the most expensive one? ( of course.) And that it's available now which means we'll have to pay that expensive rent for an entire month without living there? (exactly what I said I wasn't going to do.) Grrrrr!
Oh...I'm making no sense and I'm tired of typing. I'm so grouchy today! But, I want to post so grouchy it is. Sorry.
I just looked at my post and realized I started as sad. Amazing what blogging can do for my mood. Sad to grouchy. Huh.

Wow, you are not kidding. That is one frustrating house hunt trip. Although the sell Henry comment was kind of funny, so at least you still have your sense of humor deep within the crazy.
How about a double wide on Jay's mom's back lawn? Or a tent, a tent sounds like it could be in the front running with your options.
So many con's. I hope you find a way to feel better. This really stinks. But hey! You're done with school! Woot!
I don't envy you. These kind of major decisions can really drive you insane when it feels like things aren't coming together like you wanted them to. You have every right to feel sad AND grouchy.
Best of luck--I hope that things work out for you.
So sorry you didn't come away more excited to move there than not. What a bummer of a situation. You're ol' house in Spokane is looking more and more like a dream house compared to some of these. I hope something works out for you guys!
Ugh. I am so sorry Lucy. It is baffling to me that they can charge so much for so little.
For the record, I wouldn't judge you with the totem pole house...think how easy giving directions would be!
Good luck with what you decide :)
I don't envy your situation. So much to think about and so little time left (I am so bad at decisions, especially life decisions). I was hoping you would have found the perfect rental while there and had the last few weeks to just relax, ok I mean work your bum off and pack.
I wish you luck my friend in your speedy decision making. So will you go back or is it just a matter of choosing one of the houses you saw?
This is a sad state.... although the houses all look much better than I was expecting. I feel your pain on the yard. It has always been my saving grace and a mom and we struggled the couple of years we didn't have one.
I was actually a little surprised that you want to be in the familiar ward... I would have guessed you for a blaze your own path kind of girl. It seems like wards go in cycles maybe there aren't a lot of young men now but there will be when your boys are that age? I know... probably not helping.
Good luck. I also laughed at the selling of Henry.
that would be "as a mom"
Oh Lucy, sounds so stressful. So which house are you choosing? The first one? I'm sure you guys will make a great decision, good luck. And you'll fit right in anywhere. Everyone will be so excited to have you! Even 1st ward I'm sure, especially when they realize you're permanent.
I'm so bad with even the smallest of decisions so I can only imagine how stressful this HUGE decision is. It's hard enough to move but then to feel like there aren't any good options makes it all the more difficult, I'm sure.
Hang in there.
Oh, I'm so sorry. Moving is incredibly stressful.
Totem poles can come down. Fences can be built. Lawns can be planted. Can you negotiate with any of these landlords?
If you can avoid it, don't do anything until you feel some peace. That's my only advice.
Wow, I am so sorry things aren't easier in the house deparment! Moving is hard enough without all this added stress. I hope things work out for you, I guess you could carpet the garage and make a play area for little Henry in there? Good luck, I'll be thinking about you!
I hate house hunting because you can never find that right combination of good house, good lot, good neighbors, good school. Something always have to give, and to do it in another city on a limited time schedule, well I just don't envy you. I don't really think I'd mind living on the golf course, but I've never done it so I may hate it, but the front door to get to the back would wear on my nerves. The selling Henry comment cracked me up :).
Ugh. So sorry to hear about your discouraging trip. I guess that is why you guys weren't home when I called the other day, (duh) That doesn't make it any easier for transition purposes. I will be praying for you guys that something comes up. In the mean time here is to faith. I know I can use some right about now!
Selling Henry had me laughing too :)
Okay, this may not be a popular answer, but here's my two cents. Rent the better house. Then build or buy in the better ward. Your kids can tough out one more school change! Caleb went to three schools in three years - it wasn't easy every step of the way, but now it's all water under the bridge.
I know you'll make the best decision. That's just how you are!
i hate moving. i hate house hunting. i hate house choosing. i feel sad and grouchy for you. if it's worth anything, we went to our ward and had a "not the greatest" feeling when we were deciding to buy our current house. we bought anyway. love our house. am grateful we moved here for sooo many reasons. but our ward...well, nearly four years later, our ward is, um, really weird.
sorry you didn't come home with what you wanted.
I hope you get a lightening bolt type confirmation on your choice so that whatever challenges it presents, you'll be able to fall back on the knowledge that you are in the right place.
Happy praying.
Go with the totem pole. You could string lights up on it at Christmas time and ooh ooh you could decorate like a scarecrow in the fall.:)
I feel for you. I remember how discouraged I was after my first day of house hunting here - it was the worst feeling. And I have to admit, as bleak as our situation was, we had far better choices in the end that you seem to have. But things will work out, even if it takes a while. I wish you the best of luck. And I have to tell you that Durango looks beautiful.
I hope that everything works out. Though, I have to admit, I will be sad when you move! It has been so fun to get to know you in person and online; maybe you aren't finding good places to live because you really want to stay and enjoy some more wind.
Oh, wait, as I wrote that I realized, that is a good enough reason TO move. ;) Hang in there!
Oh, Lucy! House hunting is no fun. It should be fun, but it just isn't. There's so much to consider when you factor in house, yard, ward, schools, etc. I'm sorry you didn't come home with an address. I've told Keith many times during our house hunting process, "I just wish there would be a beam of light down on the house that's the right spot for us." Frustrating, for sure. Let's hope it doesn't come down to selling Henry!
Looks like a beautiful place to live, though...
