Holy Cow!

Eeeeks! I was just personally asked to review someone's book. It's an LDS author for her work Don't You Marry The Mormon Boys. I'm not sure how she found me (did anyone here give her my email???) but she's going to send me her book and asked me to review it and post my review on deseretbook.com, amazon.com, goodreads and my blog.

I'm beyond excited. Honestly, for about forever, my dream job has been to be the headliner act in a smoky dinner club sitting a top a piano belting out torch songs with a boa around my neck, but book reviewer might be a sweet gig too!

I know I just jumped forward about 10,000 steps, but...well...it's kind of cool.

Of course, now my stomach is in knots. I love to review books. But, I know I'ma bit of a tough sell. I'm a staunch opponent of grade inflation and if I think a book is so-so, I certainly say it's so-so. No four or five stars for something that isn't really good (in my totally unqualified opinion).

The problem is, I'm also nice. I hate to hurt feelings. And this is someone's baby. Her project. Of course she loves it more than I will. Am I supposed to be honest here or help her publicize her book?

I'm looking forward to it. Everyone starts somewhere. I've sort of accepted the fact that my black sequined spaghetti strap dress with a crimson feathered boa on stage is not going to happen, but reclusive and snobby book reviewer???? That just might fit!

This is so awesome Lucy! Congrats to you! I say do what you best- if she has read your reviews she knows you are honest, so maybe that is what she is looking for?

I hope you make business cards that have 'Reclusive & Snobby Book Reviewer' as your title. That would rock.

Congrats! You are a fantastic reviewer and like Hannah said, if she's read any of your reviews (I'm guessing yes) she's ready for whatever you give her.

Spaghetti straps, red feather boas and smoky diners. I love your writing and the visuals in this post!

I can't think of a better person for the job! That is really cool that she found you! I guess you could wear sequins and a boa while you're being a reclusive and snobby book reviewer, too. Dreams don't have to die!

Love Kel's comment. And if I ever write a book you'll be reviewing it BEFORE any publisher. Your reviews are so thorough and on point. And - mostly - you just have great voice in your writing. I never visit your blog without realizing I'm INSANELY BEHIND on the book reviews section of my own blog. I'm being held up right now by the fact that I'm half-embarrassed at what I've spent the past 6 months reading & loving. But the revelation will have to come sooner or later!

Lucy, your reviews are absolutely awesome! I treat them like gold. You absolutely should be a book reviewer! Good luck on this one!

AAAAaaaaahhhhh!! (That's me screaming with excitement!!) I KNEW YOU WOULD SOMEDAY REVIEW BOOKS PROFESSIONALLY!! I told you so. Your reviews are the best. That is so EXCITING!! AAAAaaaahhhh!! Congratulations. And to think we knew you when you were just a newbie at book club. :) I love ya.

Wow! I can totally sense the excitement in this post. Like everyone else said - just be yourself and review it like you usually do. If someone is asking for a critic, they have to expect the critical! Good luck!

Whoa. She came looking and FOUND you. What a great compliment and I'm not surprised you were requested. (I always tell my friends who want to join Good Reads, "See if Lucy will be your friend, she writes really, really good reviews.")

Hooray for you for a fun new opportunity and challenge.

You are a great book reviewer. I feel like I have a personal book shopper now. I just check your blog to see what I should order from the library.
I told some friends about your Book of Mormon Review and one of them is reading it like a novel right now she was so inspired.

How exciting! So, can you read while wearing your black sequined spaghetti strap dress with a crimson feathered boa? Sounds like the best of both worlds.

Have fun with your read - you'll do great!

Lucy I think this is awesome and honestly it comes to know surprise to me...your reviews are honest, thoughtful, and well worded.

I can see the conundrum your in not wanting to hurt her feelings, but she choose you for a reason. She knows you'll be honest and really that's what she wants.

Saaaaaweeeeeet! Congrats, woman! You'll make an awesome book reviewer, or is it reviewee?

Don't give up on the black sequined dress or boa yet. You never know.... ;)

You can totally do it, Lucy. You will rock the review. Now I just hope you like it! That would solve your dilemma quite nicely.

I don't know how she found you but clearly we are all giving her decision to ask you to write a review a vote of support! You've got a real knack for writing and for reviewing books. I look forward to seeing your name on the book jacket.

I think this is JUST what you needed after such a downer on housing. Congrats. I can't wait to see you name in print :)

Lucy - I've been out of the loop for a while. Sorry to hear things are tough with housing (that can be so discouraging). I'm thrilled that you were asked to review a book. How cool is that? If it ever happened to me (please, let it happen to me...please, let it happen to me), I would feel exactly the same way. You'll do a great job.

Amy Sorensen said...

BIG congrats, Lucy! I am certain you'll do a great job. SO exciting!!!

This news comes as no surprise to someone who can't read one of your book reviews with her mouth closed.
Your talent is stunning.
